[Frown] The world's most beautiful bus has been retired. I know it's silly to get upset about a bus, but I've always loved'em - and they're more than practical for central London - you could just hop off and on the little platform at the back - you didn't even have to wait for your stop (and believe me - on crowded Oxford Street it can take ages to get to your stop - hence their true value).

'Tis a sad day. One of the true sights of London. Their treacherous winding staircases... that leaking fuel smell... the cacophony of rumbling engine... and the conductor with his crank-handle ticket dispenser (ok - I'm going back a bit here.)

New buses suck. Ok - so there's no risk of anyone falling off while you're in motion, but so what? If you're dumb enough to fall off the platform, you deserved to get bounced by a taxi or whatever. I'm gonna miss'em. [Frown]

But I read in the latest issue of MOJO that British rail have named one of their cars after John Peel. So maybe that makes up for it in a small way.

_____________I had heard that there was a rumer that a dumb American Lawyer had fallen off of one of the busses and had sued the transport company about the lack of safety rails on the busses.

It is a sad day. Routemaster buses are one of the defining English cultural artifacts, now gone the way of slam door railway carriages, and Giles Gilbert Scott's red telephone box.

I think I feel a John Betjeman moment coming on... [Frown]

Now... all join in after 'three'.. and the tune is "Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alles"....

Gaily into Ruislip Gardens
Runs the red electric train,
With a thousand Ta's and Pardon's
Daintily alights Elaine;
Hurries down the concrete station
With a frown of concentration,
Out into the outskirt's edges
Where a few surviving hedges
Keep alive our lost Elysium - rural Middlesex again.

Damn, just had to be an anti-American jab, didn't it?
