I knew there was summit odd about the chap when he tried to hand the Champions League trophy to Jamie Carragher the other week (before being instructed that Steven Gerrard was indeed the skipper). Lennart Johansson has opened his stupid mouth again to say that ladies' soccer would benefit from them appearing more sexy. What a twat. He said "Companies could make use of a sweaty, lovely looking girl playing on the ground." Granted, I wouldn't mind swapping shirts with Rachel Unitt, for example, but should the head honcho of Uefa really be saying such things?

Now, if it would have been about Scarlett Johansson, that would be different...

I'm still stuck on figuring out what he meant by "footie thread." Oh wait! It just hit me... footie, as in short for football. DUH!

I didn't open the thread at home 'cause my brother was reading with me and I was afraid it meant the same/had similar implications to the NSFW warning. Oy. [Roll Eyes]

It brings to mind the fuss made when Brandi Chastain nailed that shootout goal for Team USA (in a world championship game, I think) and ripped off her shirt in celebration. She was wearing a sports bra, so nothing showed, but people still fussed. Would they like to see women's soccer players dressed like women's beach volleyball players (i.e. bikinis) or something?

Now what I'd want to see is a NWHL - National Women's Hockey League. Forget sexy, let's see women checking each other into the boards, and maybe getting into a fight or two!

Aside: Seems that some teams in U.S. Major League Soccer are trying to sound more European. The Dallas Burn changed their name to FC Dallas, and we now have teams with names like Real Salt Lake and Chivas USA (the latter will be playing the Colorado Rapids at Invesco tomorrow). We already had DC United.

I think that was Mia Hamm, actually.

No, I don't watch much football, but I sure prefer it to my fellow countrymen's sports (US football, baseball, basketball). I make up for it by being an *America's* Cup (sailing) fanatic, though.

In fact ... [The remainder of this post has been intercepted by the DHS. Do not attempt to contact this individual in the future, as he does not exist. And never did.]

Nope:

(That's the first image that comes up when you Google Image Search for "Brandi Chastain.")

Mia Hamm, however, was the best-known star of that team.

And the competition in question, where Ms. Chastain decided to show off her sports bra, was the 1999 Women's World Cup.

Chastain herself has said on the subject: "Anyone who thinks that a uniform will draw people to the game is severely off base...The game of football itself is what brings people to the stadium, not what the players are wearing. [These people] should continue to focus on the development of the women's game rather than trying to sexualize it." (link)

Close, but still a little too conservative.
Try a google image search for "brazilian womens soccer team".

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.

I see...but that would make it hard to tell who was playing for which team, wouldn't it?

Because it is named after the first winner of the cup that is why [Razz] (and not the country).

Hmm, the "Alinghi's Cup", just does not have the same ring to it.
