Maritime Rules of Right of way, may seem some what strange to people that never set out upon open water. Any way it seems that some pilots have been showboating and their countries leaders backing them up. Lets just say that one of those pilots is overtaking a vessel in a passing maneuver with the ship to his right. At some point if the ship turns hard Left there could be an international incident. Or the pilot may have to wash his underwear. If he were to pass on the other side it would be wrong for the Captain of the Ship.

There's a double standard operating here.

'Our' aircraft routinely patrol right up to the border of Russian (and Chinese) airspace, and if 'their' airforce challenges that, 'we' make a huge fuss.
'We' were acting perfectly legally in international airspace, and 'they' were being provocative.

Meanwhile if 'their' planes fly near The UK or The USA or Canada they will be 'intercepted' in international airspace, and once again 'we' act like it's 'them' doing the wrong thing.

It's a stupid, childish game, and one day it will get people killed.
Maybe a lot of people.

TFD, I have seen "non NATO" ships spend a whole day trying to get into a position where they could turn left and cause an entire convey to take evasive actions.

thats why there are escort ships, to flank and get in position to cause the "non NATO" ship to "Heave HO"

However the incident in the Baltic was between an Air Craft and a Surface Vessel, in that situation the Air Craft has no implied "Right of Way.
