It looked like an ordinary bottle of water. But it was on a plinth, labelled, described and in the programme of the whole festival.

While I don't agree with someone stealing something that doesn't belong to them, the value is hugely inflated based on a number that has absolutely nothing to do with the water's actual value.

Cus if it is, then my car is worth millions, because I'm sure if I drive it hard enough into a large building, it can be responsible for millions in damage too.

The most that bottle of water is worth is the cost of the friend's trip (~£2,000 at the ceiling?), and the maybe £1.50 the bottle is worth. If it's that important, it should have been in a glass vessel, that clearly had decorative qualities.

I am trying to figure out how a bottle of water is considered art.

/me is going to AM/PM and getting a bottle of Coke and put it on a special display. Maybe it will be worth 50,000. [shake head]

Well if it was in a plastic bottle, they could've just gotten another bottle, filled it up with tap water, and then put it back on display. Nobody would've noticed.

Melted glacial ice tastes really nice, (as I'm sure Xanthine will confirm) but I wouldn't pay the price of a fancy sportscar for a bottle.

Reminds me of a story from the UK a few years ago. After a gallery opening, one of the exhibits was missing, turns out the cleaners had removed it, thinking it was post-party debris.

Perhaps the water disappearing was part of the exhibit? [Wink]

No offense to anyone, but a lot of what ppl call "art" is completely worthless, overrated, and overpriced. This is a prime example.

the NERVE to call it a $42,000 bottle of water based on the ludicris assumption of "9 trillion in damages" is just so wack that i sure as hell hope someone DID drink it

No, they didn't. I just sold it on E-Bay (50 times or so) for $1,000 a pop. ... Alright, I didn't, but someone should.

When people talk about "value" it does not have anything to do with it's materialistic value.
They rather talk about the maximum amount of money somebody would PAY for it (a collector, a friend and supporter of "art").
