Because you never know when you will need to know this...

Canadian Crowned Miss Universe

 -

"I always try to maintain a positive outlook on life," she said, adding that remaining optimistic was most challenging.

Glebova, who studies information technology management at Toronto's Ryerson University, was born in Russia. She moved to Canada with her parents when she was 12.

A classical pianist and composer, Glebova says her most unusual talent "is being able to read upside down just as well right side up," according to the Miss Universe website.

I like the Australian one, at least she was interesting since she tripped over in public, and had wardrobe malfunctions [Wink]

But the Canadian one looks OK too, I guess.

Edit: Just read the article. I can so not imagine that sort of thing taking place in Thailand. Thai people are so modest, the very idea of people wearing bikinis would be outrageous to the average person in the street. And to wear them around a sacred site such as a temple would be even more outrageous. Doesn't sound like they were very culturally sensitive.

Is being able to read and write upside down *really* that impressive of an ability? I've always been able to do both as easily as I'm doing it right-side-up, but I just figured everyone could. :|

I think the whole Miss-whatever thing is highly overrated and degrading, but dang! Where can I get me one of those?

I really do agree. From a political, theoretical, personal standpoint it's absolutely an disgusting and degrading spectacle... but... pretty lady. [Smile]

Well, if the aussie winner last year is any guide, being able to read at all is quite an achievement.

They gave her a gig on one of the TV travel shows, and heavily promoted their new 'presenter'. Her autocue skills were so bad they ended up having her stand around in a bikini looking pretty while one of the other presenters did the actual talking.

She did look quite good in a bikini .....

Sure. She's hot. Yes. Anyone who wins Mrs. Universe will be hot. Very hot. Maybe vapid too, but not necessarily.

Can't we just look at them without all the hoo haa and contest and blah blah blah?!??!

What about a contest where women are judged by intelligence rather than unfairly bequeathed beauty?

It all makes me rather queasy.

But yes, she's hot. Really hot. I don't have a napkin's chance in hades with her either.

But she'd score REALLY big extra points if she said "I'm for world peace, eh."

I don't think such a contest would pick up, not as much for lack of audience than lack of contestant. Truly intelligent woman understand their own limitations, and so prefer cooperation over competition. Then the contest would have to make do with mildly intelligent women, who would quickly reach their limits, and have all the men wondering if those are really the most intelligent women they could find, then the average woman must really be dumb, thus having gender equality take a major backstep... [crazy]

So, let the hormones be excited by beautiful girls who will soon find out that winning a beauty contest means nothing in the real world*, and get your brains excited by the ordinary-looking girl you work with who can solve a bad index bug.

*Am I the only one who thought that Erin Brokovitch, as depicted in the eponymous movie, is really a girl who had her priority all wrong when she says "I'm a beauty queen, that must mean something!" (Or something along that - I watched it in French a couple of years ago, so I probably have the wording wrong.)
