Love that Chuck Berry song. Love Chuck Berry's music. So lets talk about cars. These are altered from someone else's list, but have fun.

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

2. What is your dream car?

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

That is kinda tough. I began to learn when I was around 4. My dad taught me how to shift the gears in his old 64 fFord truck. And since he and I were the only ones that understood how to get it through the gears I took a lot of road trips. But I used to joy ride in my mom's RX-4 and truly learned how to drive an old Datsun 210 hatchback. 5 speed. I didn't get a license until I was nearly 18.

2. What is your dream car?

That's easy. A 1949 Merc.

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

My first car was a '75 VW Beetle. I got it for $400. It had been hit in the front and made right turns all by itself.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

All of my tickets have been for speeding.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?

I love all my car stories and I have a lot of them. But the one that sticks in my mind the most was going cross-country in that little beetle and being told in Victorville that I would never make it 2000 miles. I did and drove that car around a bit longer after that.

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)
I practiced driving in a 1967 stick Dodge Dart, but really learned to drive in a Cavalier with a driving school. I got my license at 26. It was the only time I parallel parked correctly.
Do Canadians parallel park in their driving test?

2. What is your dream car? I think the Boxter is really cute, but would never spend that kind of money on a car. I'd also love to own my friend from high schools' car. She drove us to school in a 1950's studebaker. Fins so sharp...

3. What was your first car and what was it like? A Pontiac Sunbird that was always overheating.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for? I got a ticket for speeding. I was on my way to my mom's when my grandfather died.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc? My father is never lost. On Sunday drives we were just on a "one time road"

I was 16 when I got my license. I learned to drive in my parent's 1989 Ford Tempo, did my driver training in a 1998 Honda Civic, and learned to drive stick in a 1995 Saturn SL1.

quote:

2. What is your dream car?

Practical: I own it: 2004 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-v.
Moderately impractical: 1998 Toyota Supra
Totally insane: 1969 Shelby GT500 (Eleanor)

quote:

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

1988 Pontiac Tempest. Red. Automatic. Looked nice, was a piece of shit. Paid $2500 CAD. Sold it for $500 a year later. :S

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

3 speeding tickets. Originally:
114 in a 90 - became 105 in a 90.
94 in a 60 - became 75 in a 60.
92 in a 50 - became 70 in a 50.

Only the second one was I truly guilty of. The first one the cop paced me and CLAIMED I was going that fast, and the third was flat out impossible.

Car story? Can't really think of one. I've never been in a real accident. However, I am going on a road trip to Newfoundland in less than a month, does that count?

1 - I learned to drive at 16 with the driving-school cars, but didn't get my licence until 18, in an automatic Mercedes station-wagon. I practiced stick with the second car my parent had, a Saab (yes, they were well-off in those years...)

2 - For now, a Smart, for someday, when I get wealthy and all, a convertible Saab. The former one is cute and practical for me, while the latter is classy.

3 - First car will be a Smart, and I should get it around the end of the year, if everything goes well. Taxes hit me a little harder than I thought this year, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

4 - Never got a ticket. I'm usually somewhat stressed when driving, so I tend to stay on the safe side of it.

5 - I managed to crash my parent's Saab. I was working night shift, it was a stormy night, the road I was taking wasn't paved, and there was that sharp turn... I lost adherence, and after trying accelerating like I was taught to (but too lightly so it didn't had any effect), I only had to touch the brake to end up in the ditch the second after. A beginner's mistake, but mainly responsible for my being stressed at the wheel ever after... (The car was declared totaled, although it pretty much only had a more sporty look on the driver's side. It vouches for Saab cars' safety.)

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

19-I had to go to work and save to buy a car to learn to drive, because my parents wouldn't let me drive theirs.

2. What is your dream car?

Mini-Cooper

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

A '74 Chevy Monza, red with a white vinyl top.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

A couple for disregarding a signal, a couple for equipment violations, but none for speeding. They're pretty lenient about that around here. Mostly they just give you a warning.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?

Hmmm...anything exciting that happened, I'd like to forget. But I do remember a road trip where the family went to Florida in a '57 Volkswagen Beetle. With us three kids scrunched up in the back, it was not fun. When my Dad took us on vacation there was no stops, except for gas and to go to the bathroom. So we went the 1000 or so miles straight through. [Eek!]

16. A very old Ford Grenada.

2. What is your dream car?
One that doesn't need gas.

3. What was your first car and what was it like?
The aforementioned Ford Grenada. Once it had a tape deck it was incredible! Though it would always start, even after sitting outside in very sub-zero weather.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?
Speeding. Twice in my first year of driving.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?
That time I thought I was going to accidentally rear end the police car, but I ended up not. Talk about soiled grundies.

24, Toyota Corona, manual.

2. What is your dream car?
I've got ewomack's dream car already, it doesn't run on gas, it runs on liquid (petrol).

3. What was your first car and what was it like?
'Fiona' the 1977 Toyota Corona, bought in 1984. Ran like a dream until late '92, then got very, very sick. Took her out and shot her in early '93.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?
2 tickets for speeding, 2 for parking

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?
I rolled my driving instructors car, does that count?

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in?
I never got my driver's license. I did learn to drive, though, in my mother's Toyota Camry and my father's Jeep Grand Cherokee.

2. What is your dream car?
 -
Fixed gear Surly Steamroller. Preferably in black.

3. What was your first car and what was it like?
A Huffy Diamondback mountain bike. It was black with glitter in the paint, and had a bitchin' loud horn.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?
Once I was pulled over on my bike for riding down a street closed to traffic during a marathon. The cop gave me a citation, but I gave him one of the fake IDs I took from somebody while working at the club once, and never ended up paying it.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?
I rode with a pack of Hell's Angels through the south end of Boston once.

1) I was 18 and yes it was a manual. I've always driven manuals as I don't really like automatics. I just don't feel in control enough in an automatic.

2) My dream modern car would be an Aston Martin DB9 *dribble*. My all time dream car would be an E-type Jag *swoon*.

3) Citroen AX, it was OK. It got me from A to B, but wasn't very exciting.

4) I did get one ticket last year for speeding. I'm not going to rant about the proliferation of speed cameras and the sophistry espoused by "road safety" groups about speeding as I could go on for hours.

5) I don't really have any good car stories, but I could tell you about the time I spent 14 hours on the top of a bus in Nepal. That was an interesting day. [Smile]

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

I was 18 (wait, WAS? I still AM!). I learned in the instructor's GM and my Toyota Sienna. Given that the adaptations required are horrendously expensive and custom, those are the only two cars I've ever driven, and probably the only ones I ever will (until I get a new car ...).

2. What is your dream car?
Wheelchair-accessible cars with hand controls are limited to Toyota, GM, Ford, and Chrysler vans. That said, anything with the top off would be fun to drive.

3. What was your first car and what was it like?
Toyota Sienna. I'll get some pictures later this week and post 'em (of the hand controls, not the car).

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?
Haven't had a ticket. I've only been driving for a few months, and I tend to be on the timid side.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?
Heh. This is good. I was in the car with the instructor. My car, since it's custom, so the "instructor's brake" was actually a panel that could control the brakes, steering, and acceleration, plugged into the main computer. She leaned over to get her purse as we were slowing from 30 mph to a stoplight ... as you've probably guessed, she leaned on her panel. I was in the middle lane, and plowed into an Orkin truck on the right. The Orkin guy was thrilled; it was 9AM, so he basically got the day off. The cops were more interested in hearing about the controls than the accident (although I'd been worried that they might see the accident as evidence that I shouldn't be driving), and because the instructor was technically in control of the car when it happened, I wasn't even listed as the driver, so her insurance paid for it (instructor's insurance), and I was just a witness!

I did lose the car for about a month while they fixed the ramp and the entire right front quadrant.

1. I was 16, I learned in a '90 Celebrity Station wagon. I got my license by some providence after failing the driver's test 5 times.

2. I've got this fetish for rotary engines, So I'm going to have to go with a '95 RX-7 on this one. Although, I've also got a thing for wagons... did Mazda ever make a rotary wagon? *drool*

3. My 'first' car was that tank of a station wagon, but my parents owned that. The first car I actually owned, I still do, a '98 Protege. Weak, but gets amazing mileage and it's still fun to drive.

4. Never gotten a ticket.

5. Favorite car story: Freeway Games, by Orson Scott Card.

...or did you want one that happened to me?

Yep

as quoted by me
... my mom's RX-4

And it was quick too. Long gone now. I still think that the RX-2,3,& 4 were much better looking than the RX-7.

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

Got the license at 16. Can't remember what the driver training
cars were. Was driving my parents 76' Buick Skylark for the hours.

2. What is your dream car?

Cadillac CTS.

 -

I was actually looking at these when my Bonneville got to EOL
in March but just couldn't justify it. Thank goodness I didn't
take the test drive! My '03 Sonoma seems to suit me just fine.

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

It was a 1976 Ford Maverick Sedan and it was like the most embarrasing
thing I ever drove, but it was MINE!

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

Hmmm... Speeding, speeding, speeding, failure to yield right of
way, speeding, illegal right turn on red, speeding, speeding. I
think that's it. (Please note this is over a 24 year span however that
last one was April 23rd of this year.) [Roll Eyes]

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?

Summer road and camping trip in '85 with my girlfriend in a
'77 Cutlas. There was stormy weather one night in the u.p. and
that old GM's back seat was big enough to sleep *cough* two.
God I miss that car...

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)
I was 22 and already out of college. I took lessons with a driving instructor named Fabian back in Santa Barbara. I passed the road test on my first try, after a rough practice session of parallel parking. We used a Toyota, I think a Corolla, that had been modified with an extra brake pedal for the instructor. Automatic, so no bonus points, alas.

2. What is your dream car?
That's easy...a Chevrolet Corvette. My father used to own one, a silver '59 that he was restoring. He had to sell it when he and my mom divorced. Doesn't matter what year, though...I've still got the taste for 'Vettes. Wrap your ass in fiberglass, baby!

3. What was your first car and what was it like?
A black 1989 Mazda 323 hatchback. It was quirky...the driver's door lock was always tricky, it had no A/C, and, when I bought it, it didn't even have a stereo. (I did something about that, later.) On the other hand, it had less than 4,000 miles on it when I bought it in 1991; apparently, the previous owner had a DUI and couldn't drive it for a year. I drove that car all up and down California, and it was transported with me to Colorado. It finally met its end in 2001 after it developed excessive wear around the key that connected the timing sprocket to the crankshaft, which would have required an engine rebuild to fix. Instead, I bought an Oldsmobile Alero, leased Pamela a new Saturn, and donated the Mazda to a children's home for the tax writeoff.

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?
One for speeding and a couple parking tickets, that's all. And I didn't get the speeding ticket until I moved to Colorado and got nailed on a stretch of northbound Quebec Street south of Yale. I understand that's a big speed trap...

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?
I never had an accident in the Mazda, but I got a number of people that rear-ended me. One guy, who tagged me on the Patterson Avenue bridge over U.S. 101, was driving an old pickup truck. He got the worst end of the deal, though...his old chrome bumper was all stove in by the impact, whereas the plastic rear bumper of my Mazda wasn't hardly even scuffed. Naturally, I declined to make an issue of it.

1. How old were you when you got your drivers license? What car did you learn to drive in? (extra points for stick)

I was 16 when I got my driver's license. I started driving at age 14. Dad would take me down to the High School after Church on Sunday and let me drive around in his '88 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra

2. What is your dream car?

A 1968 VW Microbus

3. What was your first car and what was it like?

Dad gave me the '88 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. I really loved that car. It had about 200,000 miles on it when I got it, but it ran like a frickin' dream. Always had this weird shaking issue, though, between 69 and 76 miles per hour. I just drove 77 or over to avoid it. [Razz]

4. If you've had a ticket, what was it for?

Speeding, 97 in a 70 zone on a limited access highway (a.k.a. Freeway). $180 and four points on my license.

5. What is your favorite car story, be it an accident, road trip, etc?

Hrm, I don't have a favorite car story. I have a least favorite, though. Stephanie's accident is a story I'd like to forget. There's the time that my clutch cable (in my '78 VW Bus) snapped in Buchanan, on "Hell's Corner." Cold and dark and working by flashlight. There's the time I tried getting home (15 miles) on 3 out of 4 cylendars (in my '78 VW Bus); didn't make it. There's the time I pushed the clutch in (on my '78 VW Bus) in my friend's driveway and had all my power go out. There's the time my clutch linkage broke on one of the busiest corners in Benton Harbor, during rush hour and I had to limp home with no clutch at all. But, you know, thinking about it, my favorite story is when I brought home my '78 VW Microbus.

April 15, 2003. I bought a 1978 VW Microbus for $1300. It's rusty, but it's mine. When they sold it to me, they told me the starter had a "sticky spot" in it. They had to pull me to get it started so I could drive home. I got it home, turned it off, ran inside to get Dad and show him and said "Hey Dad come see!" I ran outside, turned the key and..... nothing. We spent a good 4 hours diagnosing that and we finally determined it was the ign. switch. The shortened end to this story is that I now have a push-button start on my bus. [Big Grin]
