Russ Meyer, the cult moviemaker best known for films like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, has died. He was 82.

I gotta admit, I love his work. Outrageous, hilarious, like a comic book or pulp novel come to life. Faster Pussycat, Kill Kill, and Common Law Cabin have some of the finest dialogue I have ever had the pleasure to hear. (Did you know that Roger Ebert helped write some of his films?)

No one could ever mistake a Meyer film as the work of anyone else. Initially shot for the drive-in market, his movies featured cartoonish plots containing rambunctious dollops of sex and violence, and showcasing imposing, full-breasted women. Defending his work against accusations of sexism, Meyer described these heroines as "take-charge women, the type of women I like.

I'm sad to hear this, though 82 "isn't a bad innings" as we like to say here in the UK.

I always enjoyed his work both on the superficial *cough* level and on it's deeper(?) ironic "ultra violence meets ludicrously over sexed buxom women" levels that always seemed to poke fun at the so called "liberated" 60's...

Still can't get that German farmer's sex crazed wife out of my head even all these years later... (everytime I see one of those barns... Luckily they're rare here in Suffolk UK [Smile] )

"So if you want my address - it's No. 1 at the end of the bar, where I sit with the broken angels, clutching at straws and nursing my scars..."
