Since McDonalds and other fast foods have been charged recently for contributing to the national obesity epidemic....someone has found yet another marketing opportunity which will feature a cool geeky plastic toy! "Step With It" is McDonalds
new offering starting this summer, where for just $5 bucks you get a salad, bottle of water, and a
plastic pedometer.(it logs each step you take when
walking with an ultimate goal of 10,000 steps per day)

I can only imagine cell phones with pedometers in them. It seems everywhere I look people are walking around talking on cell phones. Perhaps if
dynamo athletic shoes were created to power the cell phones and refrigerate the bottle of spring water in a waist holster...(those little thermoelectric peltier modules can do wonders)
I mean how geekie could it get!

Ah, cheap plastic toys have always been germane to the fast food industry and now there may be a solution to the unhealthy food they serve with
this alternate product line. Can you imagine bringing back your pedometer to plug in and download your foot steps for credit of iTunes for your iPod? Better yet...build the pedometer into the iPod so you could rack up your music bounty all in one device. Could it get any better?

Consider a geek/nerd r&d team devising a small device which vibrates a pulse to keep step with
for walking programs while selecting a menu of music condusive for such. Possibly a Richard Simmons walking system for the beginners, and a Pilates W/S for the extremers being developed for this application with say a Tai Chi W/S somewhere in the middle.

Could happen!

[crazy] Must stop must stop...brain in dangerous run away mode.

Give this article a look and see what you think.
Then visit the IDSA.org website to look for such.

Can you think of any geekie goodies for MickieDee's?

Special K did the same thing here in Canada, (gave away free pedometers in the cereal) and it was hugely popular.

An iPod pedometer would be really neat... here's a guy working on one...

Looky here!

What's gonna happen when it costs MD's 50cents to make a big mac. An 80cent big mac is awfully tempting to cheapskate with an appetite...

Ah, now that's my kind of place! I'd like to know more about it and others like it. Thank you Snaggy.

With consideration to marketing the four P's and the target market come into play:

Product: The pedometer/iPod/cellphone/ & others
yet to be developed

Promotion: McDonalds "Step With It" promotion*

Place: McDonalds/summer/outdoors/near you

Price: Offered as free promotion/inclusion
in the marketing mix

* Proposal for Promotion

Customers willing to partake in McDonalds Step With It Promotion could make purchases of various healthy meals each of which include a geeky device to be used in some phase of loosing weight.(on an ongoing maintenance)

To entice customers additional perks will be offered when customer returns to download his device report. For a pedometer, the number of steps could count toward free music downloads, as an example. It could offer free batteries as an alternative or other items.

Other food combinations could offer plastic encased circut devices such as heart pulse readers. The vibe beat computer pace generator I spoke of could come with the Simmons W/S or Tai Chi W/S with the Pilates W/S requiring so many steps for that module.

McDonalds could host message boards in each town where people can interact and discuss their success, point of view, questions on technique, etc. One bulliten board that could be replicated is this one which is quite popular:
3fatchicks.com/forum/

I would also include bicycle gadgets which could accomplish similar ends. There is plenty of software available for free download or even to purchase that will help the avid biker in covering more distance or working into a better aerobic state of health.

Such devices may be similar to the compute devices which you see on treadmills, exercycles, stairsteppers, and such. All of these could be set to connect to a USB port to download data to personal fitness softwares.(which could be offered at McDonalds as well)

Hey if Jared at Subway could loose a bunch of weight.......(walking several miles to and from work daily and eating twice a day at Subway any Fast Food chain could get into this)

What would a menu look like?

Step With It Menu:

Salad, water, pedometer

Diet Tofu icecream cone in double fudge or very berry

Health Smoothies (similar to SlimFast)

Baked Potato with (low fat nondairy Sour Cream based vegie stuffing)

Just to suggest a few menu items.

Perhaps McDonalds will want to advertise the number of pounds they've purchased(like the number of burgers they have sold) on their signs.

The diet industry is after all a huge business:

Americans are dieting at the highest rate in history

20-24% of American men and 33-40% of American women are actively dieting to lose weight

An additional 28% of American men and women are dieting to maintain weight

The diet industry is a multi-billion dollar industry. Over the past 20 years, the diet industry in the U.S. has tripled its gross annual income to a staggering $50 billion

There's just so many possibilities! LOL

Just using McDonalds as an example.

Nintendo used to have a little toy called the "Hey You, Pikachu!", which was essentially a pedometer. The kid would walk around and generate credits that they could download into the other Pokemon games for new and different critters.

Good idea; too bad they spammed Pokemon all over it.

I remember having something like that. It was an egg, and the more it shook, it would hatch, then grown and you had to feed it, and play with it. I think that the too have a game like that with battling of some sort but that could be that Pokemon thing. The one I had had nothing of Pokemon on it but it was pretty much the same idea.

We used to put ours in the dryer with it set to air fluff (no heat) and we would get booku points. [Smile]
