this is not a joke but it is quite funny, one of my colleagues home PC's will not allow him to visit or use the microsoft site using IE but firefox will display it and allow him to use it fine. He has spent a total of about 2 hours on the phone to various people at microsoft so far (they phoned him) any they have not been able to fix it, he has run all sorts of spyware checkers and antivirus programs on it to no avail.

p.s. if you were wondering why he would want to visit microsoft's site, he is the person who teaches the mcse courses here.

Last time I tried Micro$oft on a PC running Firefox was to run Windows update -- and Mr Gates wasn't very happy about that either. "Use IE or die" seems to be the mindset... And if you use MSN Messenger and then save the conversation as HTML, IE will always take over as its default program, regardless of what you've set as your system default...

There are times when using Micro$oft is like having your leg humped by the dog...

I stoped doing the MS upgrades. It feels like every time you do you get 2x the problems. And every time they put out a new OS it has more and more problem. Maybe they keep hiring dumber and dumber programers.

You know if he is having it on a home PC he may be looking at something inside Windoze causing the problems.

If it is 2K or XP, he could try to rename his user file (documents and settings, etc) to .old and try logging back in. See if it cures it. There is the possibility that his user account is corrupted. And if he is an MCSE instructor he better not be using the standard Admin account.

No!!! Not if that computer is ever to be used on the Internet. M$ updates are very important, despite the fact that they may break your computer. I've seen unpatched machines get hit in 4 seconds, upon connecting to a seedy network.

Ask me if I care what happens to my windows machine. lol

For the most part we only use the windows OS for games thats all it's good for. We use SuSe and OSX for the internet. And we do all the patches and upgrades for those.

Well, I'm mostly concerned about other people's computers. People like you can deal with Windows and its security risks, but if you're working on someone else's computer, and don't get the patches, you're doing them, and the Internet community as a whole, a great disservice.

*nix boxen are much better beasts. [Smile]

I got my mom on SuSe [Big Grin] She is computer illiterate for the most part. I showed her how to get on the net and how to play Solitare and thats all she wants it for (I don't feel like going over there weekly to fix the thing thats why I put Linux on her computer she has a habbit of getting spyware on her computer). Other then that I just fix my co-workers computers when they do something stupid. MIS takes care of the MS upgrades.

Well there are other people who care when your computer gets hacked and turned into a zombie used to relay spam to the rest of us.

Oy! MacD!
If you ever *needed* a reason to keep the Windoze machines in your "care" up to date, have a look at this piece on Slashdot

If nothing else, please could you do those of us who are stuck with (predominantly) Micro$oft networks at work a B-I-G favour and check that you haven't got any open relays anywhere? Hmm? Please? Pretty please with sugar on? See, I'm not a big fan of cause and effect, but in this case I can definitely see the logic...

Thank you and good night.
