I made a deal with my parents over the programming tournaments. If i do very good jobs on it, my parents have to buy me a SSDs or HDDs. I got my results back from it. Since I didn't did it all, they are going to buy me a HDDs or SSDs in Christmas. Which one that I should buy for my macbook?

iNoles, I really have trouble understanding you sometimes. I know you want a recomendation on SSDs or HDDs, but other then that, due to grammer, I do not comprehend you.

FYI ( and it is not limmited to this post)

And as for the recomendation, I am not a mac user.

There are two schools ot thought on your very question.

SSD Bleeding edge not much track record to base an opinion, some battery drain during off periods.

SSD Lower current draw while on (no Motor) to spin the platters, should be faster seek time, depends on how well the memory director is written.

HDD Spinning platters, may be damaged if dropped while spinning, subject to bearing failures, arm failures.

HDD Known commodity Good track record, despite being a mechanism.

So if any one knows of track records or performance curves, it all boils down do you want to be the test case. One point I forgot to raise if you have a HDD failure it is sometimes possible to get your data back.

SSDs have so far not really lived up to their promise. I'd just get an HDD at this point.

Seconded. Reviews so far have shown minimal differences, and actually make SSD look worse. This goes contrary to the 'obvious' conclusions, but I'm not going to disagree with the findings, nor the price tag! [Razz]

I'd have to say I'm with the majority here. From what I've read SSD price/performance ratio is dismal at this point. It is a bleeding edge technology right now and the positives don't outweigh the negatives (cost and lack of significant performance over HDDs).

For the money you'd spend on an SSD you could get a much larger HDD plus at least one other very large external HDD for backup purposes.

Wait a couple of years and see where the tech goes, reliability and how able people are to pull off data from a dead SSD.

i will third or fourth or something the opinion.

SSD sound like a great future tech. but so far they have brought no real benefit, and the price is nasty. maybe someday, but not today for the SSD.

or am i fifth-ing the opinion? anyone else need a fifth?

Hating to repeat what others have said, I'd go for the hard disk drives, real life tests have shown that speed differences and power consumption differences are marginal and SSD prices are still high to consider them more than a novelty.
At prices that high you better get high end HDDs that are faster and still doesn't cost as much, like 10k RPM ones... hmmm, VelociRaptor RAID *drools* http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-VelociRaptor-10000rpm-WD3000GLFS/dp/B001AQWLTQ/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1219173437&sr=8-1
