I play Guild wars (mmorpg) and currently have a 24 member guild. now i'm thinking about creating a website where i can announce dates for gvg battles and scrimages and just expand on what i plan to do. But i don't want to spend the 20 - 110 bucks on getting a website. But i don't really want to create a .tripod or .myspace website. I'm just wondering if there are any webhosting sites which aren't spamriddeled and illegal and offer website for free.

i'd use something like blogger.com

any idiot can set up a page and posting times to play is easy as blogs are designed for daily updates

I don't think you can use Ruby on Rails on nearlyfreespeech.net because of them not using fastcgi.

It's a shame, because I love the look of that service. Has anyone here actually tried it yet?

yeah I just noticed: "Ruby on Rails (this works, but the performance is wretched due to Rails' unfortunate architectural dependency on FastCGI)"

Pity, they're an interesting site. Or you could just use something else to build the site with :>

I need something which is easy to start of with but will eventually after mastering all the skills allow me to create a sophisticated website with all the bells and wistles. Also do you guys have any recomended books or websites to learn this magical program.

I guess Dreamweaver is the one most people recommend, but I'd honestly consider writing it by hand. You can make more efficient, standards-compliant websites, track down problems more easily, and if you do intend to use Ruby on Rails (or any other dynamic scripting stuff), you'll definitely need to understand the source code that you want to generate.

It's really one of the easiest things you can learn. There are a few basics to understand, and then it's just practice.

Dreamhost gives you fastCGI and RoR support. It's probably more than NearlyFreeSpeech, but their service is top-notch.

By the way, I heard that the RoR devs are deprecating a bunch of stuff shortly. You may want to look that up before you start coding the new site.

Here is my list:
Ackoo - Starts with a very reasonable basic package at $3.95/month. Featureful, very nice control panel, etc.

ICDSoft - Personal plan is slightly more expensive @ $6.00 but comes with more space/bandwidth allocation. Less flexibility in the scaling of hosting plans, has excellent support.

Evil Hosting - Free with no ads, but you have to bring your own domain name. Never used it, so I can't tell you anything about it. I'd be interested in hearing about it though, if anyone has.

Thanks for the suggestions, i've used dreamweaver before (non-html side of things). And thanks for the suggestions on cheap sites. I really don't have a lot of time and money to learn multiple programs and make an expensive site. I just need a program which will last while still allowing me to make my website as complicated as i choose.

thanks everyone for your input.
