As right now Im shopping for a laptop for college, Im seeing this offered optional on many systems. What is it and should I NEED it?

If you want to go wireless, and can afford to do so, there are many who say Bluetooth is THE way to go.

I'm not in a wireless environment, so cannot attest to that claim. I only offer it as an elementary reply to your inquiry.

Bluetooth is not the Wireless I think you are thinking of. Bluetooth is a wireless technology, but it is short range and mainly for peripherals such as mice and for syncing data between computers, PDAs, and cell phones. There are also bluetooth headsets.

If you want wireless internet connectivity you need WiFi or 802.11

If you have a phone with Bluetooth, such as a Sony Ericsson T610, then I would highly recommend getting a Bluetooth enabled laptop, as there are some very cool toys such as this or this that you will surely want to play with! The other main reason you might consider this is if you want to use a wireless keyboard or mouse with it.
