I am wonder how does one get traffic onto a site? I've been trying webrings, and word-of-mouth to some degree, and there has been some improvement, but not much.

Any suggestions?

Oh, and this is not just relavent to my site, but for another one as well.

There's a lot of discussion on the webmasters' blogs about what works and what doesn't.

High quality reciprocal links to other relevant sites is probably the best first step.

Generally, for success with Google, time has become a huge factor due to the exponential increase in the number of new sites coming on-line daily. Propogation still only takes a few days at most, but getting fully indexed by Google will probably not occur before the site has been live for about 8 months. Google denies this, of course, but there are plenty of websites designers and owners with stories to prove it. It is referred to as the "Sandbox".

The comment to buy a Google keyword is pretty helpful. You can advertize using AdWords by Google and/or Overture by Yahoo. Very easy, straightforward and affordable. (Particularly AdWords - no set-up fee and you control the daily budget instantly.) Will show immediate increase in traffic.

Content is still key to bringing your indexed site up on the pages on any major search engine.

Go here

The best way to get traffic is to create something of note that others want to link to, then get the word out so that they know where to link to.

Of course, the hard part is making them want to come back again. [Big Grin]

People come from all over to look at that? Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. [Wink]

Content is king (I know, it's unhelpful, but ...). A site that I maintain is at the top of Google's results for "high school computer club", simply because of our wiki full of random junk (like the 137 Gig limit WindowsXP has).

The other thing that helps is if your URL shows up in a lot of places - put it in your sig here, it'll show up whenever you post on /., etc. Keep in mind that putting it as content in a post irritates people, so please limit it to your sig.

Edit: actually, we're no longer at the top ... the local volunteer who gives us webspace has switched from FC2 to debian to FC3, so the resulting effect of our site being offline for a few weeks means we're no longer even in the first 3 pages. Bummer :'-(

My dad went to the Galapagos. He bought a t-shirt with a pair of blue-footed boobies. He wears it under a flannel, and asks the unsuspecting victim if they want to see his boobies.

He says women always look. I must admit, they are nice boobies.

Hrm guess I forgot to mention that money is not an option here.

Garlic guy: Sandbox? Well, I have searched for my website's name and the other site I am referring to, and they turn up on my results page.

Snaggy: Well you created a site that makes people come back EVERYDAY *applause*. Unfortunately, I cannot draw comics daily [Razz]

The reference was to a Google search based on relavant keywords, not your URL or title. Those would naturally turn up your site on a search. [Wink]
