Hi all!
Besides my iBook, which I totally love, I have a WindowsXP machine. This windows machine of course, needs protection- so I bought (big mistake) Norton internet security 2005 after I had the 3 previous versions which were quite perfect But 2005 makes everything go slow, and its just a pain in the ass.
Does anybody of you know of a good Windows XP firewall?

thanks-
tom

Zonealarm [Wink]

If you have an old PC to spare, IPCop or Smoothwall would be even better.

If you use a DSL/Cable router you can use its NAT plus the one XP has built in. Has worked for me, so far.

/me waits to be hacked, now that I opened my trap.

Don't really do more than toy with x86 compatilble stuff but I believe the FREE, ZoneAlarm is a passsably good product for its price.

They also offer a range of payware stuff too...

Checkout www.zonelabs.com/ for full info...

Alternatively you could just BAM (Buy A Mac) [Wink]

Just about deciphered that one Moped Rider...

As I know you know only too well that a Mac runs either Classic Mac OS based on Motorola chips (68k series or the PowerPC series) or the BSD based Darwin kernel OSX on the Motorola/IBM G3 - G5 series I will consider that as a joke (as indicated by the [Big Grin] ).

Try to type more carefully, I know that your spelling isn't ever going to be great but slow down and try to manage to be a bit more coherent and use the CAPS where needed....

(NOTE for other GCers, I know Moped Rider IRL, he is a really nice guy and a long time friend of my SO/fiancée, however he does have difficulty with the written word as he is fairly dyslexic... I try to encourage him as best I can but he finds it hard. I would appreciate it if we tried to cut him a little slack, though that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to help him by pointing out grammar errors etc. Just try not too be too harsh.)

I have ran several different firewalls in my time. McAfee, Norton, ZoneAlarm, pcChillin*, windows, being the most known. Of those I found ZoneAlarm to be the best in most aspects.

For a virus scanner I use Norton 2004 though.

I've also been using Check Point VPN Secure Client. It's a handy VPN program with some nice firewall settings. I use it with ZoneAlarm for firewalls but when I have to use it as a VPN service I have to disable my ZoneAlarm. Either way the setup is working pretty well.

*I don't remember if pcChillin was antivirus or antivirus and firewall, I think it was both, either way I didn't like it much.

I have never been a proponent of software firewalls, though I may be biased as building hardware firewalls accounts for a large part of what I do for a living.

Honestly, I have had very bad experiences with ZoneAlarm, though this was quite some time ago and I can't really comment on their newer releases.

As someone already mentioned, if you have a router, this can act as a firewall. If you don't have a router, my suggestion would be to purchase an inexpensive router for this purpose. You'll avoid many headaches this way.
