I was running a dual boot with SuSE and XP on seperate HDs and when i tried to switch from SuSE to XP i got a:
Windowsroot/system32/hal.dll not found
Please re-install a copy of that file and reboot.
The only problem is i cannot log on to reinstall.
I've tried to mount my other HD from linux but it tells me that the drive is unmountable for the same reason.
I've tried to run a system restore and even booting from a disk but they both seem to be running into the same error.
Is there a way that I am overlooking to get my computer back.
BTW: I got internet on my linux. My hardware wasn't compatible.

Have you tried booting it into Knoppix or even XP from CD? I know you said "disk", but I don't know which disk you meant (some of us still use floppies, after all).
The ideal situation would be to boot it from the XP CD -- that way it can automatically repair the missing .dll's (I'm sure there's more than one -- Windoze has a bad habit of only telling you the first one it needs, not all of them).
If that won't work, you can try booting to Knoppix or Linux from CD, and manually replace the file. Then boot to XP, find out what else is missing, then repeat step 1. Tiring, but it should work.
I feel for you, Jace -- I went through the same sort of situation. It is possible to get things working again, but it's a pain in the @$$. I wish you luck combating the Beast of Redmond.

Ok, I tried using the XP cd and it booted me into the recovery console from where i used:
expand e:\i386\hal.dl_c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
I did this a couple of times and it told me that the XP CD was not found in the drive.
From here I used my sis's laptop to write the directory i386\hal.dl to a floppy and run the same command substituting e for a.
It came back the same deal. "There was no disk found in selected drive" or something to that manner.
FSCK!!! THIS IS REALLY STARTING TO PISS ME OFF!!
On a side note: how do you do an install in linux. I tried and the "great" YaST2 has a GUI for such a thing but it doesn't seem to do anything. I tried again from YaST and it was showing i had invalid file names.
i was using: rpm -i gaim-0.76-0.rpm
but with no prevail.

sorry, had to do that. I was thinking of getting WinXP to replace my aging Win98 SE machine but have been told that it hates to dual boot, so let me know how you get on with Win2K please ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Jace, I use "rpm -U --force gaim-0.76-0.rpm" on my mandrake system and it works fine for me. Stibbons, I have been running Mandrake (from 9.0 up to 10.0 community) alongside 2K for ages and I have had no problems at all dual booting.

I wouldn't buy it, if I were you - I'd copy it off someone who already has it (Win2k has none of that 'product activation' crap in it to worry about).
It's about £200 in the shops.

WAAAH, It's true! Even XP Pro is cheaper!
Maybe I'll just stick with Slackware and 98
Actually, just found this at £83, so that's not *too* bad. Maybe OEM is the way to go...

Nahhh... proprietary software is like sex - one should never pay for it, nor sell it... and it's usually very messy, disappointing, and you have to run around afterwards hitting the little worms on their heads with a hammer...

dissapointing? worms? hammers?
i think you're doing it all wrong, there should be none of those involved, but a lil bit of mess can be a good thing
well, except the hammer, in certain circles....

9 times out of 10, the OEM CDs are quite illegal to use - they're from someone who already paid for the computer, and is still effectively using the license. e.g. I've seen OEM CDs at computer shows which are Dell CDs saying "This is not for distribution without a new Dell computer." I have hundreds of these things in my closet at work - I'm not using them, and they're factory sealed, but it would be quite illegal for me to sell them, and also illegal for others to buy them -- particularly since I have Windows installed on the computers the discs go with.

Ah yes, but I'm assuming that the eBuyer one is probably an unused Windows 2000 OEM. It just means I can't install it on another PC... but why would I want to do that anyway?

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Your way DID not work, but it gave me an idea and it did work help me get hal.dll back a few seconds ago... what you need to do is go in to the restore console like you said, but instead of expand e:\i386\hal.dl_c:\windows\system32\hal.dll you go copy a:\hal.dll c:\windows\system32\
actually mine was copy a:\hal.dll g:\windows\system32 because I have my xp on the g: partition, but anyways, it works!!! I've run into this problem a few times before, but never though about a way to get around it by just copying dll to a: THANK YOU AGAIN! You just save me a LOT of time reinstalling a lot of stuff.

I'm with DM97 on this one, particularly in the workplace...
Unlicensed software is bad, mmkay...
You and I may not especially agree with it in principle, but if that's what we have to use, then "the paperwork" has got to be in order...
