I've been thinking about upgrading my PC over the summer, heres the planned specs for the new rig:

Intel. P4 3.4ghz Processor
4x 512mb DDR 3200
120gb Hard Disk
DVD Drive (Fair Speed)
nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra

^ Now theres the big question...Graphics card. I was deciding between going all out with a nVIDIA card or going ATI. I'm an OpenGL programmer when I have the time, and the nVIDIA drivers have always been good to me. What are the ATI OpenGL drivers like, especially in the new cards. I need support for OpenGL 2.0, but cost is also a major issue and I'd much rather go PCI-E, ready for any future hardware.

So is it the GeForce 6800 series or the Radeon X series?

I've used both Nvidia and ATI over time, and my personal preference is Nvidia.

I can't help regarding OpenGL drivers, but if you ever intend to run linux, I'd definitely lean towards the Nvidia card.

Getting any type of 3d acceleration working in linux on an ATI card is absolute hell (took me a day and a half of tinkering to get it working on a Radeon 9700 Pro). Nvidia cards on the other hand is as simple as compiling a kernel module and adding a few bits of magic to your X config...

Or you could just buy Windows, and save yourself years of easily avoidable linux downfalls. [Razz]

You're *not* a mac user from the looks of it...so, we should be listening to your opinion on operating systems because....? [Razz] [Wink]

Edit: FWIW, I have extensively used MacOS, Linux, and Windows, so I suppose I'm entitled to state any opinions I may have... [Wink]

'tis not a question of being a mac strong hold. The question has never been mac or PC, it's been about how well Linux runs on them both.

As a linux user, at least I can compile my own kernel -- as a windows user you cannot. ever. (unless you work for M$)

Alright, to stop with the my OS can beat up your OS... OpenGL rules, and the companies make decent windows drivers for both cards -- so with windows my money would be on where I could get the most bang for the buck.
