So yesterday was International Womens Day here in oz, and I thought I'd share a couple of relevant stories with you.
The first was the appearance of a LNP (aussie political party, think Kansas Republican Party - God, Country, and Farm Subsidies) politician at an official IWD function.
The guy did the predictable thing, a speech about how his party supported womens rights, and are most definitely not a bunch of sexist middle-aged blokes who think women belong in the kitchen and bedroom. Then came the 'Any Questions' - and a member of the audience asked him about his (previously undisclosed) ownership of an internet porn site.
Brilliant setup, it made me laugh, but apparently most of the IWD audience were not so amused.
The other thing happened last night. I was playing taxi driver for Druidling V1.0f, dropped her off at choir practice, and then had an hour to kill so I went to wander about the local shopping centre. It was almost deserted, most of the shops had already closed, and those that were still open had few customers, except for one small computer games shop, which was almost crowded. 5 stereotypical gamer geeks were browsing through the collection, about as many customers as the whole rest of the shopping centre combined.
And then I found out why, the shopkeeper appeared from the back room, a hot blonde Brandy-lookalike TTB in a short skirt and low-cut top. All eyes were instantly upon her. It was kinda creepy, but also funny, and you've got to admit - that store really knows their customer base.

I must admit, until the Google logo, I didn't know about 'today.' Then it came up in discussion with two European acquaintances who filled me in on the fact that today is a big deal. Clearly that shows just how International the US is. :/

Perhaps IWD is a metric conspiracy? Or an Improvised Weapon of Destruction. Both sound really bad. Good thing we don't tolerate that nonsense here in the U.S.
