If you go by the bible, we're all the inbred offspring of the incestuous relations of Adam and Eve's children.

And let's not even get into the bit about how Noah is supposed to have had three sons, no daughters and one wife who was the only woman on board the ark when the rest of humanity was destroyed.

Uh, you gotta reread that passage, Steen. The sons brought their wives with them. So it was four women, four guys in the ark.

EDIT: Oops. Someone beat me to it. Sorry for the extra "gettin' on your case.")

I intentionally misrepresented what the bible says for humorous effect. Even with wives, you're still talking about first cousins breeding in order to repopulate the world, but everyone doing their mom is funnier/more horrifying.

Slightly off-topic: has anyone else begun to suspect that the old testament story of Noah could be an allegorical artifact of the Toba event, possibly perpetuated through the societal subconsious? (That's a lot of five-dollar words... I need to rest now... )

The Burckle Impact around 5000 years ago seems a more likely candidate.

Or, it could just be that all the early civilizations arose in river valleys, so stories of a 'great flood' wouldn't be surprising. </Occams-razor>

Given that just about every culture with documented creation mythology has a story about a flood, I've always assumed that the Noah story was a leftover from the end of the last Ice Age.

____ I was under the impression that an Earthquake near the Black Sea caused the flood, and then slowly drained away??

That would probably be this theory. There's evidence of human settlement on what's now the floor of the Black Sea. Anyone living there when the Bosporus opened up could be forgiven for thinking the Wrath Of God had descended on them.

The bay Melbourne is based on was formed in a similar way, at around the same time. Aboriginal oral history describes the event, and agrees quite well with the geological evidence.
