This is the list of the top 100 singers of all time. Take a look at it, then look at it again, how in the heck is Christina Agulera on there but not Billy freaking Joel? They are missing a ton of amazing artists but have plenty on there that made me drop my jaw!

I am surprised to see that Rolling Stone has been able to continue to remain viable. They really don't have their fingers on the pulse of any generation. It seems like they are stuck in the middle of some type of crossroad and really have no idea where to turn. I am surprised to see Lou Reed and Tom Waits on there, but I have a feeling that those names are on the list because of some of the leftover greybeards and not so much because of a real sense of musical taste. And don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of both, but they are not singers.

Christina Aguilera is also not what I would call a singer, but that may be because I have gained a healthy disdain of most pop culture.

Sadly, I think Christina Aguilera is, technically, a very good singer, it's just that everything she sings and everything about her is a crime against good taste.

Oh, I haven't checked, but do you know if Shane McGowan is on there? [Wink]

Obviously the list is flawed... Rick Astley is not on it.

Bah! It's just a "top 100 of most popular pop/rock/wathever is|was in vogue american (or popular in the US) singers" list.

Where is Pavarotti? Sarah Brightman? All those classical-background signers who could do more with their voice than 90% of those on the list? What about all those international voices who rose above frontiers and time? What - just because average Joe never heard them disqualify them as "singers"?

But yeah, I like opera and choral works. They make me shiver a whole lot more than all those "top 100" singers together.

The purpose of lists like this is to get people arguing, and of course you could make a case for plenty of others, but in those particular categories blues/rock/r&b/soul it's not a bad list. They all have distinctive voices that imprint their personality on their material. I also think it's quite correct to have Aretha at the top too. She has such a magnificent voice that it is easy to forget that she is also a very great piano player too. The thing I really love about her is that you always get the feeling that there's an untapped well of power behind everything she sings, rather as though she's guiding a rocket propelled motorbike and being quite delicate with the throttle. This gives her voice mystery as well as power.
