Teachers are constantly faced with issues such as this when teaching students phonics and spelling. This example reminds me of how the spelling "ghoti" is pronounced "fish".

Take that English! Spanish only uses 5 vowels with their sounds being equal to their spelling. Too bad its grammar is far more complex than English's.

An early version of the Microsoft Word spell-checker used to suggest "fish" for "ghoti".

Sadly, the humour police seem to have found this one, it's not in the version I have here.

Indeed. I use littleghoti on a number of boards (such as /.) where littlefish is already taken.

In a similar sense, "Gotti" was once regularly used as a replacement for "Sleeping with the fish".

Fifty different conjugations for an irregular verb is not as simple as having only infinitive, gerund, past and participle forms and play around with auxiliary verbs.

Example: Oír (to hear).
