I passed my orals. I'm a PhD candidate now!

I'm pretty sure I left some blood and brains on that floor. Almost none of what I studied I got asked about...

I'll be working on the same thing I've been working on since I joined my lab. This exam was more of a weed-out than anything else. If you fail you're expected to defend a Master's thesis, pack your things and go. If you pass you can continue for your doctorate. You can also pass conditionally (ie, they won't say you've passed until you've taken a class or something like that). I got away with nothing more than a lot of chalk on my hands. It was kinda like sparring with someone bigger and higher ranked than you in a karate class. You know they will win. The only question is how long the match lasts.

/me purposefully beams hard at Aditu

[Razz]

Okay, here's part of the story. The story I will tell my own students one day, it's that goood...

So I had three people on my committee. Two biochemists and one guy from physical. The committee chair was also the head of the biochem division (one step down from department head). This had the potential to be scary because not only is this guy powerful, but I rotated through his lab so he knows me. He doesn't hold grudges, but he knows me and therefore knows my weaknesses. However, I'd like to reiterate that he's got power, so when he says jump, all the biochem faculty will jump. And this worked in my favor.

They hand out reminder slips to everyone involved in an oral exam with the date and time and participants. My committee chair, heretofore known as "A" got one of these slips with the proper date and time on it. The physical chemist, heretofore known as "B" got two reminder slips. Both had my name on them, but one had the information for one of my classmates who's going up tomorrow. So he got confused, dealt with the people in the office who were also confused, and eventually made his way to the room A and I were in. I don't know what happened to the other biochemist's (let's call him "C") reminder because C never showed up. A seminar was announced yesterday and this seminar was scheduled right on top of my oral and C apparently got so excited about the seminar that he forgot about me (which gave my boss a real shock when he walked into the seminar and saw C sitting in the audience). So we waited around for C and then A got up and went to find C or a substitute. And he found D. D works one floor down from my lab. D is very junior. A is very powerful. A said "I need you for Xanthine's committee because C has disappeared," and D said "Okay." So poor D walks in cold, having never read my thesis proposal. He knew who I was and who my boss was so he could guess I was doing RNA crystallography but that was it. Fortunately D and I are in the process of making friends so he didn't go in hating me. So we started late. And then we somehow got to talking about things I had barely studied, like the noise level in a scintillation counter.

I had one advantage and that is, after more than ten years of playing the viola, I can handle stage fright. I had my committee completely faked out. I wanted to throw up, but they thought I was unflappable. Maybe I should take up acting. [Razz]

The really fun part is my boss gave me permission to give C crap about this. Whether I have the nerve to or not is another story, especially since A is without a doubt going to have a thing or two to say. I'm just glad that A had all the right information!

Wow, you play the viola?! That's awesome!! It's my second instrument. I've been playing since sixth grade, so that would make it 13 years now that I've played it. Shucks, you'd think I'd be brilliant now after all of that but I only studied with an instructor for seven years. Do you play any "fiddle"-type music or just classical? I'd like to play in a Celtic or rock band sometime, either on piano, viola, or guitar.

Congrats on passing your exam. You rock! [Big Grin]

Well, I'll keep that in mind [Wink]

Actually, I've found that people heavily into music (particularly classical) can be a bit, uhh, different. I'm trying to work out whether it's a correlation or a causation, though [Razz]

Hmmm. More like laid-back raving loonies. [Razz]

Rhonnie, I play strictly classical. If I could do it over I'd play bass. Bass gets more variety.
