I got a new job. I was hoping for something more fun but I took this. It has really good benifits but the draw back is that I'm going to be chained to a desk again [Frown]

What? You took what?

Tell us! Tell us! Tell us!

And what were you hoping for that was "more interesting"

Come on give us something to work with here....

Well done on getting a job anyway...

It's either slave labor or a security post? [Big Grin]

I'm chained to a desk too!
Lets take a poll: Who here has a job that requires sitting at a desk all day?

I write billing software at an ISP.

It's about as much fun as a root canal from a drunk postal worker.

That's partly why I'm working on a Master degree (maybe followed by a Doctorate) - though for now it involves spending some evenings at a desk too. I want to play with robots, and try them all around the world. [Big Grin]

Me,

I'm chained in front of my beautiful G5 2GHz DP, in my little office on my own, all day (well, except for bathroom breaks or fetching a pint mug of tea - and no I'm not exagerating)

Actually I like what I do and where I get to do it. Also I have a corrected club foot (talipedes) which means although I have no trouble walking etc., I find standing still for any amount of time rapidly becomes uncomfortable... So I never stand when I can sit down (that's my excuse and I'm damn well sticking to it...)

I'm usually behind a lab benchg, though lately I've been at my desk studying. I hate sitting around all day (makes my lower back sore) so every now and then I'll get up and do a half-assed experiment.

I work from home, so I'm technically only working when I am at my desk. I don't even get to sit in meetings for distraction. When I do, it's over the phone, so I'm chained to the phone at my desk.

I am up and down all day. I work the reference desk and resurrect idiot's computers out on the floor. It used to be that going out on the floor meant pulling things to answer a question. Now 9 times out of 10 you are rebooting for someone who opened a zilllion chat windows.

I work in the front office for a doctor. I pretty much sit at my desk unless I'm filing charts. But I always have to be nearby to answer the phone too.

I am semi-sedentary.

Official title: Computer Technician. i.e. Monitor carrying, hard drive puller.

Unofficial title: Jack of all trades. Which means. Servers, switches, custom apps, web, whatever needs to done. So I have a 50/50 job. Half a day tied to the desk, half a day running from site to site.

I am a student. When I do work, I work behind a desk - like Serenak, I am unable to stand for lengthy periods of time, so this is a Good Thing.

Threadjack: During the summer (and weekends) I've been working as an odd-jobs IT guy. Mostly web dev and image retouching, although I've done a bit of other stuff. However, my skills are mostly oriented towards the technical side of things, and I want to develop a more artistic/design-type side. Any advice?

OK Mage,

For no more than my own personal curiosity what causes you not to be able to stand still for any time? (Tell me to FO if that is too personal, or PM if you don't want to broadcast it)

Regarding developing the more artistic/design side you will have to either post more info or probably better PM me with a bit more info...

I do design for print (letterheads, leaflets, brochures, business cards, magazines... if it goes on paper I tend to work with it).

Currently I have a job that is probably 70% simple production and 30% design. Used to do 80% design and 20% production but that is a seriously stressful environment and it finally got too much for me...

Did a few websites years ago and built them using simple HTML - but times move on - Websites are not really my bag and never were...

Tell me where you want to go (as it were...) and I will try to give you whatever p0inters I can

You've probably never heard of the disorder, but it causes my joints to be somewhat malformed - i.e., my hip socket doesn't fit quite right, and my ankle and knee ligaments are loose. So standing for more than a few minutes is tiring and/or painful.

Basically at this point, if I have a mockup I can code it (within reason). But I'm still working on figuring out how to come up with said mockup. What differentiates, say, the kind of stuff on CSS Zen Garden from Dabs.com? (Yes, I do realize that a lot of stuff on CZG is overblown, but a lot of it is fairly nice looking).
