Well I will avoid mentioning the more obvious stuff and mention a few more oddities...
Gene Wolfe's "Shadow of the Torturer" tetralogy (more properly the Book of the New Sun IIRC) which is actually a quintology if the single follow on "Urth of the New Sun is included, is a very unusual read - being SF so far in the future as to feel almost like fantasy.
Fevre Dream is an interesting take on the usual horror/vampire deal by someone called George R. R. Martin - never heard of them before or since - just a book I fell on by chance
M.A.R Barker - The Man of Gold, and Mary Gentle's Golden Witchbreed and the sequel Ancient Light are books that make you really believe in the alien worlds and cultures they are about.
Joe Haldeman's Forever War (best read in conjunction with its apothesis Heinlein's Starship Troopers) takes a look at war when it can take a lifetime to get to the battle.
I second The Long Walk and also the Running Man (yes the book the cruddy film came from - don't let that put you off) which were authored by Richard Bachman (as were a couple of others less memorable). Mr Bachman was later discovered to be none other than Stephen King writing under a pseudonym to prove to himself that his writings were actually what was getting published and not just his name... Look for a compilation called "The Bachman Books" (actually I liked some of the Bachman work more than some of his King books) maybe because the editors were "firmer" with a little known writer?)
If you like Pratchett look also for Aspirin's "Myth Inc." series - a lesser genius perhaps, but mostly predating Pratchett.
Oh and a good translation of the Iliad and the Odyssey are kind of a neat read if you like that whole 300 thing... ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

It's published and available on lulu.com (I have to OK the proof copy to send it to the next step of global distribution. Unfortunately, I initially planned to sell it for less than its current price, making it comparable to other sci-fi books. However, the distribution and royalty fees tacked on kind-of made it more expensive.
I am hoping amazon.com will sell it at a reduced cover price, or that the brick-and-mortars won't raise the price to cover shipping the book in or something . . . we'll see.
See my sig for the link.

This is the first in the greatest series of books ever written. Dorsey is without a doubt the master of masters. Start here and keep reading ...
Be warned though, you will never be satisfied reading another author after you have spent a few days with Serge Storms.
Nothing compares - nothing!
But I still read Neil Gaiman, Randy Wayne White, Carl Hiassen and a few others.
