It really depends on what kind of games they want to play. If they like Final Fantasy then you have to go with the PS2 because that is the only platform it comes on. And with the PS2 you can still play older PSOne games as long as you have a PSOne memory card. If they're more into stuff like Halo you need to get an Xbox. I'm told that Xbox is best for older people. If they really like the classic Mario and Link stuff then you should get Game Cube, but that is really best for younger people. A lot of games are available for both PS2 and Xbox so either one of those should be Ok. Xbox has a hard drive, PS2 is lighter and the new design is pretty sleek.
Personally, I have a PS2 because I am mad about Final Fantasy. I just finished FFV and FFVI, now I'm working on FFVII. Eventually I'll get to the ones actually made for the PS2. And Josh loves playing SOCOM 2 at night. Of course, now that Fable is out I'm trying to justify to myself the cost of getting an Xbox. ![[Geek]](graemlins/geek.gif)

uh for xbox there is only fable, halo, and now halo2. there is a plethora of much more addicting games for ps2. not mention the fact that you wouldnt be supporting bill gates' evil empire.

Yeah, I'm not too sure what they'd be playing be I'd guess they would be into 'first person shooter' stuff..
Any rumours of new versions of these consols coming down the pipe. I'd hate to buy one, then find out a new, better version is released the next week.
Forgive my ignorance on this topic....my last (and first) consol was an Intellivision ![[ohwell]](graemlins/ohwell.gif)

Xbox also has a bunch of sports games that are "Only on Xbox". When I worked in the electronics section at Sears there were at least a dozen games with the label "Only on Xbox" on them. I have also heard that with the PS2 there is often trouble with the disk tray and the lens, but I've had mine for a year and I bought it used and it hasn't given me any trouble.
I don't think a new version of Xbox is coming out soon, but I'm not sure. The newest version of the PS2 is the sleek one I mentioned. I'm not sure when it will be released, but it is less than half the height of the original PS2 and about 3/4 the length and width.

I must admit, there are times when a console sounds appealing. After all, a big screen TV and rocking 5.1 surround setup would go just perfectly with some games (eg sports games, fighting games, etc). But the TCO is fairly high, since the games for them are fairly expensive, even the older bottom of the price range ones.
As for which one, I know plenty of people with Xboxes, and plenty with PS2s. XBox people seem to be fanatical about Halo, and I don't hear of any other XBox games with the same cult following. As Peebs said, Final Fantasy on PS2 is very popular.
I wouldn't worry too much about it, anyway. It's not unheard of for console gamers to have one of each console (even Gamecube, sometimes).
Personal rant: Why do game companies refuse to make certain game genres (Virtual Fighter like fighting games and tennis games in particular) available in PC format? I don't want to buy a console just to play those games!

Well, I just bought the PS2 "sleek version" last week. Incredibly small, I've seen books bigger and heavier than that. It's also cheaper than the previous version (for what I know) as it comes internet-ready for a little less than CDN$200 (if you shop around), while the internet-combo was about CDN$250 for the previous version.
I've also heard Sony had released that new version while preparing the PS3, but I have no date of release. Next year, maybe.
Now, my RedOctane dance pad has shipped too, so Dance Dance Revolution Extreme, here I come!
On that last topic, I've also found that the Game Cube has only one "rythm game," and that is the DK Bongos that came out a couple of month ago, while there are many available both for PS and Xbox, like the "Groove" one with Eyetoy for PS2. This may or may not be a factor in your choice.

Seems to me that it is quite evenly split between the PS2 and Xbox. So who do you want to make richer, Sony or Redmond?

Getting an Xbox could be the right kind of encouragement for Bill.

(Sorry about the geocities link. I couldn't remember the exact date that strip appeared or I would have linked to it in PVPs archive.)

I personally own a PS2, and I do have to say that I enjoy it tremendously. If they are into Final Fantasy, then you will want the older larger PS2. The online version of Final Fantasy comes with a network connection and a hard drive that only the larger PS2 has room for. Personally I never got into Final Fantasy, but I know a little about the characters from playing Kingdom Hearts which is a best of the best game for playing, and for graphics. Other fantastic games are Sly Cooper, Spiderman 2 {much better than the PC version}, X-Men Legends. Tak and the Power of Juju, and just about all of the Star Wars games to name only a handfull. The only reason I can see to get an Xbox over the PS2 is Halo. I have a cousin that has both the PS2 and an Xbox, and the only game I ever see him play on the Xbox is Halo.

I have a PS2 and my son has a GameCube. He's a diehard Nintendo fan, so that was the obvious choice for him. I do like the Cube because the Mario games are most definitely "safe" for any age child.

I think I read that both Xbox2 and PS3 are comming out mid-late 2005. The PS3 will support the new "Blue" laser DVD. I have not heard of what MS is planning.
At my house we have the PS2, Game cube, GBA, Mac, Linux and Winblows. (I know Linux doesn't have many games) And nintendo just realeased the DS a portable game system with 2 screens.

I 1st bought a GBA SP because Sonic Advance was mde for it. Soon after that the Game Boy Player for the Game cube was released so I ended up getting that and a Gabe Cube. There are some great platfom and adventure games for all ages for the Cube as well as some Mature 17 and older games.
If you want to be able to play online against people go with the Xbox or PS2.
Or if you want to play "Cop Killer and beat up women" go with the PS2
There are many great single and multi-player games for the cube and I am very happy with my choice.
As Thomas Dolby says "May the Cube be with you"

The Playstation rep for Sears told me that the PS3 isn't coming out until after they release the hand-held version of the Playstation, so we're looking at more like Christmas 2006, possibly earlier if Xbox is really releasing an Xbox2.

Bibo there are quite a few great PS2 exclusive games that are neither cop killer and beat up women games.
Ace Combat 4: Distant Thunder Eye Toy both Play and Groove {Groove is good excercise} Gran Turismo 3 and 4 Jak and Daxter 1 and 2 Kingdom Hearts {Kingdom Hearts 2 probably coming out early 2005} Ratchet and Clank
PSone games are also compatible with the PS2 and it is more than likely that the PS3 will also emulate a PSone and a PS2 so you will be able to play the games on the PS3.

Don't worry you can do it on an X-box or on your PC. Cop killing is a multi-platform attraction. And great for kids of all ages. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

My little brother has an Xbox has a few games, and is getting Halo 2. If you want shootemup or sports games, get an Xbox, if you want a varitiy (sp?), get a PS2 (actually think for the future so they don't have to get a new system when their tastes get more mature (or immature, depending how you want to put it). I have a gamecube and I play Zelda, Mario Sunshine, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4, and 007 NightFire, which isn't that violent of a FPS. The nintendo was definatly designed for a much younger audience, and if you want something not to expensive (get them more games), and that their parents might not want to kill you over, get the gamecube. Oh, and if there is more than one of them in the house, or just so they can play with a friend or parent, get them an extra controller.

This coming from a developer who brought us a yellow circle-like character chomping down white pills while running from ghosts.
Has anyone played frequency or amplitude?

It makes me sad to go into stores and not see many games for the GameCube. I bought one and the main reson was because they brought the game consel into homes (I know they where not the first but when they first came out everyone had one) They do still have the largest maket share of portable games on the market. But the new Mortal combat game is not on it. I think it would be very wise of Nintendo to make their next system backwards compatible if they even want to try to compete in todays market. They where even one of the first console companies to do this with the GameBoy, GameBoy color and then GameBoy Advaced & SP. I would have to go check to see if the DS is backwards compatable.
Ok I think i have finished with my ranting.
Need ..... more ..... coffee !!!!
Edit:
I just looked it up

You said you just finished 5 and 6. I'm assuming you mean the Japanese released 5 and 6 since they didn't exist here? 6 being 3 in NA? 5 being a game that was never released here?
7 has a *LOT* of fans and is still touted as the best one of them all.
9 is my favourite thus far, but I'm weird that way. I'm half way through 10, but haven't played in some time -- I don't have any time.
