I usually think boycotts are ineffective as they'll hardly be felt, but this is an easy enough one to participate in and I think it's worthwhile. Dice has gone way too far in fscking up /. - their upcoming beta interface is an abomination. The first time I was subjected to it a few days ago I wanted to watch one of Steen's videos just to wash my eyes out from the pure horror.

In short - don't visit /. at all from the 10th to the 17th of February.
For details, see: http://slashcott.com/

I'm not sure this will have any impact, but this situation is sorely disappointing to me - I've been reading /. for roughly the last 15 years - and it's how I found this fine place. Would I consider abandoning /. if it makes beta permanent? Yes - I'd grudgingly follow a friend of mine and move to reddit. :/ In the last few years, I've started to follow ars more, but I always enjoy finding new and interesting things on /., and of course, it's all about the comments! (Those are the most ruined aspect of beta.)

I will vouch for the fact that it is truly a horrible redesign that screws up the site's basic functionality.

At this post I realized that I hadn't seen slashdot since google killed reader. ( I migrated to netvibes but hated it). I no longer check my feeds and my feeds were the last place I went to slashdot.

I haven't been actively posting on slashdot since, well probably 2006.

Is a UID in the 500k impressive now.. It wasn't back then.

Ash...try NewsBlur instead - I'm probably happier with it than Google Reader.

I never could use an RSS reader for things like /. or Lifehacker - I found the firehose nature to be too much to sift through and disliked having such a high 'unread' count. I skim the homepages of sites like /. (and gave up on LH a few years ago), ars, NYT...for everything else, there's NewsBlur. [Smile]

I second the NewsBlur recommendation. I also like it better than I liked Reader. I like it enough that I'm close to buying a subscription even though I don't anticipate needing or wanting any of the premium features.
