In a new study, scientists have found that the left and right ears process sound differently. From birth, the right ear responds more to speech, while the left ear is more attuned to music, according to the study, published in Science on Sept. 10.

That's actually really interesting. Makes you wonder. Can one nostril smell better than another? Yea, probably not, I know, they both actually go into the same place before processing by the brain.

But what about eyes? Can one eye see colour more vibrantly than another? What about sensitivity of feeling in your hands?

Is whether a person's left handed or right handed make a difference?

I took part in a study a few years ago into the way the brain is wired up. As well as handedness with the hands, it occurs with everything which you have two of*. You have a dominant ear, ear, leg, etc. It was only a one day thing though the guy in charge said that there was much more that we could test for.

Your eyes do see different colours more vibrantly, or detect movement better than each other - try it out by closing and opening each eye in turn in low lighting. Your dominant eye (for me, the right) is the one that actually focuses on things - the other eye just follows where the dominant one follows. You can find it by focusing on a small object and making a small ring with your fingers round it. Then move the ring back towards your face, never losing sight of ther object, and the eye it ends up against is the dominant one.

Back then we didn't know about the right ear for speech, left ear for music thing, but we were able to show that one ear is better than the other for listening to quite sounds, and picking up slight frequency changes. Easy way to find your dominant ear is see which one feels "best" when trying to hear a conversation on the other side of a closed door.

The most interesting part for me though was that you also have a dominant brain hemisphere. You know about the right hemisphere is the musical/artistic part, and the left the lynguistic, logical bit? That would make sense with the ears business, as the left side controls the right ear and vice versa. But you also have a dominant side of the brain which controls how you think, and this is found by asking a series of questions and seeing which side of the head you look up to when you roll your eyes trying to think. Seriously! It did seem to correlate with handedness in most the people tested, with right hand dominant people having a dominant left hemisphere and the same the other way, though occasionally you get entirely one side dominant people - we had one right (me [Smile] ) and one left in a group of about 20.

Hope that answers your question dnf. If not I've wasted my time (really need to get on with my maths paper... [Big Grin] )

It took me a minute to figure out what you were referring to... heh I'm so dense sometimes. But, actually, you DO have a dominant testis, the other one is technically a "spare" in case something happens to the "main" one. You can figure out which is which for you because the dominant one is generally slightly larger.

I heard, possibly a myth, that the left nut generally is larger and hangs lower in all/most men.

Lets do a 'rollcall' fellas!!

Hmmm... That's interesting! I never thought of that before.

I work in a call center, and most of the people on the phones here have monaural headsets with just one speaker. I'm going to start looking to see what the distribution of lefties vs. righties is next time I'm out on the floor.

When I put my own headset on (I always expect tech support calls to take way too long, heh), I prefer to have the speaker on my left ear, and if I was thinking about something I would most likely look up to the right. But I am a sample size of one. I'm also right-handed, and (judging from years of martial arts) fractionally better with my right leg.

I'm right-handed but I always talk on the phone with my left ear. I can't concentrate on a conversation on the phone with my right ear. I'm also right-foot domanant. I do, however, have a lefty gene as my dad is left-handed. My brother is also a lefty, but I must've gotten mom's right-domanant gene.

*checks his sack*

Hrm... and I'm aparently left-nut domanent....

I'm left-handed for writing. I hold the phone to my right ear. I bat right (but I can switch-hit) I kick with my right, when I think I look to my right, my right ARM is stronger (for things like shotput [don't try and make sense of it]), I throw with my left. I shoot right in hockey, and I use scissors with my right hand (although I think that might have been indoctrinated at school over the years.)

Newf...You'll notice I didn't go after you about your 'switch hitter' post or the 'real' reason your right arm is stronger. ---> -

How about: when I talk on the phone, I always put the phone to my left ear to listen, as I find it hard to concentrate on the conversation if I'm listening with my right ear. [Razz]
