Yay, i finally upgraded the Forums.
So, as you can see there are now Avatars.... cool. You can select yours in your profile, which you can get to by the little link to the right of the chatting heads graphic. Custom avatars may be arriving, but they will be limited to SuperFans.
Preview Post! Yes, you can now preview your post! It opens a pop-up window, (sorry non-java folks) where you can see what you're about to unleash on the world.
Instant Graemlins and Instant UBB Code.... to make things even simpler, use if you choose.
Private messages.. new! Private messages are Forum messages that can only be read by the recipient. To read them, you must go to your your profile section. You can also elect to be notified by email whenever someone sends you a private message (you can set this in your profile). You can also prevent anyone from sending you a private message (also configurable in your profile). To send someone a private message, look for the private message icon on a post a person creates. You can send a private message through the person's member profile, or from your Buddy List, if you have added the person to your Buddy List. Great for moving those really long and boring public "See I told you so", No, I told you so!" posts to a non public domain. Also nice for passing love notes around. Note.... Abuse, and you lose.
Today's Active Topics is much better i think, showing more info, but it still has that super annoying bug of cutting everything off after 12 AM Forum time. It really should be the last 24 hours of posts, ...I'll try to find a hack for this.
Recent Visitors is cool, check out the bottom of the main pages and see who is around and what everyone is up to. You can make yourself invisible to the Recent Visitors list by entering your profile page, selecting the Update Profile link, and changing your Hide from Recent Visitors feature? preference.
Member ratings... members can now rate each other in a very goofy and unscientic way, the star sytem. You may elect to not have other members rate you. To turn off member ratings for yourself, just change your profile settings. NOTE: MEMBER RATING IS A ONE-TIME ONLY VOTE. IT IS PERMANENT, YOU CAN'T CHANGE YOUR VOTE. Which suks.
User titles: users are given their titles based on the number of posts they have made,. I'm sorry if some of our wonderful "Neat Newbie" members were demoted slightly during the switch... The official Forum rank changer control panel has fewer options than my old hack.
SuperFan Forums: Superfans get some perks on the Forums... html in their forum, ... and the ability to create and vote in polls! Very cool.
Ok, that's all i can think of now, you can find more in the Infopop FAQ
Have fun
oh, obligatory sales pitch.... as you probably already know, this all takes time and money to run... if you can, and if you want to, please show your appreciation and support our continued work here by picking up something at webstore, or by becoming a Superfan. Many thanks,

Very nice! The user ratings are kinda dumb, though, but great for getting back at someone. That's why I disabled it. I'd hate to know what my rating would be. I didn't know about your upgrade of the forums, but I did add on to my superfan membership. I hope it helps a little.

Wow... and I thought the forums were great before. But I guess they were great before because of the people, now they're super great because of great features and great people ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Perhaps the guy who wrote the code for those images was named Graeme, and so they're called "Graemlins" in his honor. Just guessing. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

I think that "Graemlins" is a European, or maybe Canadian spelling?
In any case, great work Snaggy! I especially like the way that after you reply to a thread and it takes you back, it scrolls to your reply so you can proof it!
Can't wait to see what's up next

OK, I've decided. The new forum code is not an improvement. In fact, it's a huge step backwards.
First point: we can't see whether we're logged in, and there is no "login" button. "But wait," you say. "Yes there is, right up there!" I assure you, there is not. See, here's the code:
code:
<script language="Javascript" type="text/javascript"> <!-- var user_cookie = getCookie('ubber2452511.1413'); if(''==user_cookie || null==user_cookie) { document.writeln('You are not logged in.' , [...snipped to prevent long lines...]'} else {
var user_array=user_cookie.split("&"); user_array[2] = unescape(user_array[2]); document.writeln('Hello, ', user_array[2]);
Second point:
quote: So, as you can see there are now Avatars.
No, I can't see them. Though I did see them briefly when I turned on Javascript. Here's the code:
code:
<script language="JavaScript1.1" type="text/javascript"> <!-- var avline = avatar_line("http://www.geekculture.com/ultimatebb/Avatars/111.jpg");
Notice a trend here? Why couldn't they just use <IMG SRC="Avatars/111.jpg">? Third point:
quote: You can select yours in your profile,
Nope. Javascript again. Fourth point:
quote: Preview Post!
Nope. Javascript required -- not because it pops up a window, but because the entire button is written in Javascript instead of HTML. This is a cardinal sin: site navigation features using non-standard script extensions instead of standard HTML. I could live without the silly avatars, but buttons that actually do stuff are another matter entirely. Fifth point:
quote: Instant Graemlins and Instant UBB Code.
Nope. The old ones worked great -- you could mouse over the smilie and it would show some sort of script at the bottom of the browser window. Clicking on it wouldn't actually do anything, of course, but you could read the text embedded as a parameter to a function call in the script and just type it in! With the new one, all it says at the bottom is javascript:void(0). Functionality has been destroyed. Sixth point, and this is the major one:
Add Reply does not work any more!!
Yes, that's right. It's impossible to post to the forums using a standard web browser. The only way you can read this, in fact, is because I temporarily turned on Javascript so that I could send it. Here's the code:
code:
<input type="submit" name="submit" value="Add Reply" onclick="ClosePreviewWindow()" />
This is not acceptable. Sorry, Snaggy -- I hate to think I'm going to cause you distress by saying this, but there's simply no way I can use the forums in this state. Whatever morons at UBB decided that HTML was obsolete deserve all the blame for this fiasco, not you.

Javascript required -
Hi greycat,
Yeah, i wasn't too crazy to find this out, as I knew it would bother a few of our members. It does however seem to have been welcomed with loving arms by the vast majority.
To be honest, imho, I feel javascript is just a reality of day to day life on the web, like Flash. The way i look at it, this site also won't fit on a floppy.
I looked at other boards, they each seem to have their own bit of annoyance, and for me upgrading the current UBB made the most sense at the time, especially since it preserved so much of what was here already, including all the registered members.
However, there are several features I need that I thought were in this version of the UBB and are not, GRRRRR, so I still may be switching the whole thing over to something else yet again.... we shall see. Of course I've already spent the money and time on this upgrade, so I'm not a truely happy geek either.
Ah, the heavy weight that rests on my shoulders....

OK, this is getting more than a little bit annoying. I have logged in SEVEN TIMES in the last two minutes. Every time I change page, including the automatic page refresh that occurs after submitting a reply, it tells me I'm not logged in.
What technology is behind the user tracking? Whatever it is, it's not working for me.
I'll try visiting with a different browser to see if that makes any difference. It never did prior to the site upgrade, but that might have changed.

That use to happen to me with the old version when trying to access the SuperFans area, but with the new version this problem has fone away.
This problem occured under the old version with Mozilla 0.92(the earliest I tried it with) - Mozilla 1.0. It worked fine with Opera, however. I should mention that Mozilla was used under both Linux and Solaris 8,never tried it under windoze[0].
Bregalad, what browser(s) have you had this problem with?
[0] Sorry, windoze boxes are for playing games and only for playing games. Not for surfing the net =)

Prior to the site upgrade, everything. IE, Mozilla, Opera, etc. on both Win2K and MacOS X.
Today it's my usual Windows browser, Opera 6.0.5 that's messing up. IE on Windows is working fine, but I won't use Internyet Exploder unless I have to. I've chosen to go with Mozilla 1.1 and turned on the "always remember password for this site" feature.
It's weird that I tend to visit GC using Windows when 4 of the 5 computers in this room (not counting my "museum") are Macs, but that's what I do.

I also used to get stuck in an endless loop of login screens when trying to access the Superfans forum (Mozilla 1.0rc1) - this now appears fixed.
I'm seeing occasional wacky table sizing and odd bits of HTML going unrendered, but please don't fix that as it's amusing
Bregalad, I assume you've tried deleting all geekculture cookies?

The authentication tracking is done with cookies. The "you are not logged in message" is done with Javascript, which checks to see if the cookie is set.
This is in the first bit of code that I posted in my previous rant! (I suppose nobody bothered reading the code.)
I think the "You are not logged in" message that you see while you're posting a message (while you're in limbo) is transient and can probably be ignored. If you're still logged in when you get back to the forum page, then you should be OK.
(Personally, I always middle-click the "Post Reply" button so that my response gets a new window of its own. After the message is sent, I close that window, and return to using the window from which I was reading the thread. Of course that window is now out of date, so I Reload/Refresh it and double-check that my own post is at the bottom and is correctly written. This may have benefits in terms of the authentication tracking as well, since if the new window does something odd, it gets destroyed anyway. YMMV.)
And now I get to spend a couple minutes enabling and disabling Javascript....

What Snaggy really means about Javascript being a current reality is that the privacy-invasion and in-your-face marketing BS of current business models has to be reinforced by making them necessities to use the site.
But that doesn't mean I have to use the site.
Bye.

Makes me wish I had the time to add more features to Venice to support everything this current system does and everything Snaggy would like it to do...Venice uses no client-side JavaScript. (It uses a server-side JavaScript interpreter, but that's a different story altogether.)

And the little pictures you have to look at now. If anyone's so worried about privacy issues, there's one sure method to take care of that-unplug your modem!
