Oh dear! Another wrong rumor?
It turns out this was just another in a very long line of FAILed rumors for the year 2011. Rumor mongering is at an all time low IMHO. Read it and weep, or laugh, which is what I'm doing:

Hmmm... that statement is very slipperily worded and hardly amounts to a categorical denial. It just leaves the door open if Microsoft decides to have another go.

I'm reminded of a couple of years ago, when all the Zunes crashed due to a bug in the calendar code. Someone (The Onion?) ran a headline...
Every Zune in the world crashed - Dozens of users inconvenienced.

I agree. It's not at all different from the buzz that basically says that Zune will continue in software. This thing said "Windows 7 phone is the current Zune release." It's not a stretch to say "We won't produce any dedicated Zune audio players, but it'll live on in Windows 7 mobiles." (Mind you, the latter will probably be used by roughly the same minimal group that uses Zune.)
