Actually in general torque is inversly proportional to speed. The mindstorms motors are higher tirqu but lower speed that the old technic 4.5 motor. As for projectiles, have you seen this?

Finally, a device that allows acceptable use for AOL subscription CD's! I like it. Lego Mindstorms are suprisingly versatile. If you have the means, definitely pick up a set. My Sumovore kit mini-sumo uses an Atmel atmega8 uC programmed in assembly but it can really only be a SUMO. Mindstorms can get you a beer, arm wrestle and usefully apply AOL CD's to hard objects.
