Following hot on the heels of the Apple SSL bug, we have Heartbleed
Huge security holes in SSL, that could be programming errors.
This is the kind of thing Edward Snowden warned about.

Well, according to a recent /. thread, the guy who did it said "oops" and it's said to be an 'honest mistake.' The entire source tree is online and it's traceable. It was written/checked in around New Year's Eve, and perhaps it was a bright idea that just wasn't exactly.
