Since its inception, I've been adamant that I would never sign up for a Facebook account. First it was a bit contrarian; then a bit stubborn; then privacy concerns mixed in.
Well, last week my younger Clublet turned 13, that magical age when you can legally "get a Facebook." And I sadly came to the conclusion that my responsibilities as a parent outweigh whatever social or moral arguments I have against Facebook. So now I, too, have an account, with which I can keep an eye on the inevitable Facebook drama that will surround my not-so-little one. Not to mention the drama which already touches the elder clublet from time to time.
Well, that's a good excuse, anyway, right?

So long as you don't spend all your waking hours doing updates, pokes, or whatever it is people do on Facebook these days, you'll be alright.
While I stay the hell away from it, and would rather you were 'one of us,' I respect your reasons. You've taken the low road while aiming for the high goal.
Of course, you could teach your Cublets that "Facebook is for sheep - the cool kids run their own webservers." (What's the name of that allegedly open competing system? I actually attended a presentation on it, but saw so many holes in it that I forgot about it 'til it came on the scene about a year ago, and quickly fell off the radar.)

I can see how people can lose hours of their life at a time to Facebook. But I suspect maybe those people have addictive personalities anyway.
I almost had the older Clublet designing her own site a few years ago. I still have her subdomain set up, in fact, but she never put anything on it.

Facebook isn't so bad if you approach it correctly.
I have four facebook account. One is the one I use for friends who insist on uploading photos to facebook which then require a login to view. One is a placeholder to ensure nobody creates an account in my name.
The other two are throaways... one used for those companies that require or give bonuses for liking them on acebook login while the other is used as a referral when companies are stupid enough to do things like "refer your friend and get $20 off on your next purchase."
Other than my real name on the placeholder account, none of the information on any of the accounts is real, so I couldn't care less if it gets sold, stolen, put in a database or displayed publicly.
tl;dr Facebook isn't too bad if you treat their TOS as if it were printed on toilet paper.

That video is just plain weird w/o context (found by RTFA).
I'm pretty sure the moral of the story is that people who use CRTs in are creeps. ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
