Ronnie James Dio, lead singer of many iconic early heavy metal bands like Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Dio, died on Sunday, of stomach cancer. He was 67.
Among other things, Dio is credited with popularizing the heavy metal "horns" hand gesture, also known as "throwing the goat," while he was lead vocalist for Black Sabbath. (He replaced Ozzy Osbourne in that capacity, recording two of Sabbath's iconic studio albums, Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules.) This gesture is expressed as the ASCII graphic at the end of this post's title.
He was one of the icons of heavy metal, whose influences can be felt across the wide range of metal today. He will, of course, be missed.

This is sad news - the little fella with the big voice has passed away.
I never felt that Ronnie belonged in Sabbath, but I do believe that he was a man who knew exactly how good heavy metal should sound. I have been listening to Holy Diver for the first time in nearly 27 years...such memories.
