Someone, somewhere in our government, has read way too much 1950s scifi. This made me giggle.
Can you catch a killer before they commit a crime? Claire Bowles, New Scientist
IMAGINE the scene. You arrive at New York’s JFK airport, tired after a long flight, and trudge into line at passport control. As you wait, a battery of lasers, cameras, eye trackers and microphones begin secretly compiling a dossier of information about your body.
The computer that is processing the data from these hidden sensors is not searching for explosives, knives, guns or contraband. Instead, it is working on a much tougher problem: whether you are thinking about committing a terrorist act, either imminently, or at sometime during your stay in the US. If the computer decides that might be your intention, you will be led off for interview with security officers.
The equipment could also screen passengers as they wait to have their bags checked before boarding, in an attempt to predict when someone is planning to bomb or hijack a plane.
It sounds far-fetched, but this is the aim of Project Hostile Intent (PHI), the latest anti-terrorism idea from the US Department of Homeland Security. According to DHS spokesman Larry Orluskie, the DHS wants to develop systems that can analyse behaviour remotely to predict which of the 400 million people who enter the US every year have ‘current or future hostile intentions’.

Who doesn't, standing in these long lines waiting to get through customs, into a goverment building or standing in line at a bank, think about ways one could circumvent all the security, just as a mental exercise to pass the time.

And thus the PHI Corps was born.

LOL!
I was reminded of the cold-war remote viewing projects when I read that article, too.

Yeah I just see this as a waste of money and resources. How would the machine know if your evil smirk and quick glances at security is because you are thinking about the cute female security guard or you are thinking about committing a terorist act?

If it were a whole body scan like in the article, it would catch the boner too, and they'd know it was just the lady guard.
jeez, reading comprehension, yadda yadda...

What about when a major flight shows up late and all of a sudden there are two hundred people frantic they are going to miss their connection and be stranded?

I've always wondered -- if you combine this 'pre-crime' idea with the concept of original sin -- would that make shagging illegal?

But if you catch a criminal before they commit a crime, wouldn't you have to release them before you lock them up?
Otherwise your prisons would-are-already fill up with would-have-are-to-be killers.
Or something like that, where's my copy of "101 tenses for time travellers" ?

If the release before the imprisonment, then once one is in prison, one will never be released, because that has already occured.
truly, I have a dizzying intellect. </dread pirate roberts>

We may not have universal health care but we could have mind-reading border patrol robots by 2012. God bless America!

Speaking of innocent until proven guilty and original sin, these lines popped into my head.
quote: Ooh, I know what you're doin' I know where you've been I know where, but I don't care 'Cause there's-a no such thing as an original sin
And steven, you have just not seen the right uniforms. Like something in a black vinyl riot guard number, stiletto heels and a taser in case I get a bit unruly.
Hey Mo Man, when are we ever innocent before proven guilty. I can't count the times I have been brow beat by cops, judges, ex's and family members about supposed ills I have committed. If I did half of what I have been accused of, I would have better stories to tell.

Glad that is the case spungo.
After some indoor fireworks last night, I awoke feeling mighty as a rose. Then I read this thread, I had a little trigger and thought I might as well pump it up. Just for the effect.

There's a right way and a wrong way to go about catching people before they actually commit a crime.
