From an e-mail I've been trying to send to Ian Rosenberger tonight:

Hi Ian,

Funny things happen when you're babysitting. Sometimes the nights drag on with screaming babies and disgruntled brothers. Other nights, you pick up "People" magazine and discover the picture of a PGSAS [Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Agricultural Sciences] classmate and fellow PSU almuna. :-P

I figure the show is finished taping and you probably can't talk about it (and to be honest I don't want to know), so I won't ask you about that. (Did I hear a sigh of relief? lol) I did check out your PSU ePortfolio and that's really what prompted me to write to you.

The letter to your family--the one written while you were interning--really struck a chord with me. And I had to think how ironic that essay will prove to be in the coming months and years. Now that you're one of the "nice, handsome" men on Survivor, you're the subject of hundreds of websites (Google your name and you appear on a domain called Paris-Hilton-Sex) and will receive a lot more attention. People will be fawning all over you and flocking to bask in your televised glory. (I'm not a big Survivor fan; my mother is. I'm totally thrilled that you're a dolphin trainer. However did you land that?!) I hope you've been able to find friends who "stick closer than a brother" 'cause you're going to need them to withstand this publicity storm... and to have someone when this all blows over.

No, I'm not volunteering my services because to be honest, I'm slightly intimidated by you. Not because of your height because oddly enough, most of my male friends are significantly taller than 6 feet, but because you're one of the "Brilliant People"... you know the type because you described them so well on your portfolio. They're the people with the blazing light in their eyes--the kind of light into which you can't look for long because you'll be burned up with its heat and intensity.

I vaguely remember our days at Governor's School and what I do remember isn't terribly pleasant. I remember struggling to fit in and to find friends. I've never been popular or into pop culture, so making friends was difficult. While you and I were never close friends, your excellent manners didn't allow you to act unkindly toward me and I appreciate that.

What I remember with greater clarity are my years at Penn State when I would pass you on the street. You always acted happy to see me. Although I never knew how to talk with you, especially after you became USG president and with that inherited an increased popularity level, I appreciated your acceptance of my
innane conversation.

All that to say that it rather surprised me to read in your essay that you felt some of the same things as I felt...and sometimes still feel. I claim to be without a lot of prejudices, but reading your essay reminded me that I'm still rather prejudiced against people I perceive to be popular and "out of my league." I never imagined that you felt alone at times, for isn't that one of the reasons which we
admire popular people? They appear never to be alone...never without.

I want that fire that you have. I want to be one of those Brilliant People, but on days like today--days when Adjustive Disorder with Depressive Episodes fights its hardest to gain control--I resign myself to the fact that today is not my day to join the ranks of the elite, for "to whom much is given, much is required." I am encouraged that inside, Brilliant People have fears and dreams, insecurities and careful thought.

Ian, I'm just really impressed with who you were and who you are becoming. I pray that "God will continue the good work in you until the day of completion in Christ Jesus."

On a lighter note, has Marianne Fivek contacted you to be her poster child for Govvies School? I'm envisioning a terrific ad campaign: Ian Rosenberger, Survivor: PGSAS. :-P [Fellow PGSAS scholar pursuing journalism] could take the photographs and I'd edit the ad copy (I'm currently a proofreader for Clipper Magazine).

I wish you all God's best, Ian. May you never lose the fire inside,

~[Rhonwyyn]

Disclaimer: I've never watched Survivor:Pulau, so I wouldn't have the faintest clue exactly who you're talking about.

I found myself in a somewhat similar situation where I recognised one of the most recent "Big Brother" housemates when I was walking from work to the station. Of all the housemates, I related most strongly to this particular guy because he tended to overanalyse things (much like myself) and toed the line between introverted and extroverted. He also made a very gutsy (IMHO) statement about Australian refugee policy by refusing to speak in his post eviction interview, instead holding up a sign he'd smuggled into the house with "Free Ta Refugees" on it, and taping his mouth shut.

So what did I do? I didn't know whether it was appropriate to start up a conversation, and so didn't do anything. He was walking in the opposite direction, but he was by himself. I'll always wonder to myself what would have transpired if I'd got over myself and just started up a conversation with him.

So, in other words, good on you Rhonywyyn for writing that email, which is obviously from the heart.

Because of my schedule, I won't watch Survivor. I'm not sure if I could stand to see Ian voted off if they ever do. Plus, watching the episode that my mom taped was agony because I was kicking myself the entire time for allowing myself to feel intimidated by this guy who would've been horrified to know that he intimidates me by his niceness. It's a sad story to know that I can handle obviously mean guys and the teasing/flirting ones, but nice ones make me uncomfortable.

It's also frustrating that I've tried three e-mail addresses tonight and all of them have bounced. So if I really want to make contact with Ian, I'll have to snail mail it to his parents' home.

Does anyone know of an e-mail directory online? Something like Switchboard.com or 411.com where you enter the name and location and it finds all possible e-mail addresses for that person?

Hmm, that would do it, albeit slowly. I don't suppose the Survivor program has an official web site which allows you to send fan mail through, or whatever? That may be an option, although it also risks being lost in the torrent depending on who does the filtering, if any.

Nope, not that I know of. If such a thing existed, it could be misused by spammers and stalkers, which would be a bad thing (not that the telephone directories can't be misused also, I suppose).

Incidentally, what does it say about the guys of GC if you presumably feel comfortable and unintimidated hanging around here [Razz]

I dun watch the Survivor shows anymore (only the very first one that aired), but I was curious as to who this Ian guy was. Doing a little search, I found some Bio. info. about him, and this stood out: "He is most proud of participating in Penn State's Dance Marathon, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, where he did not sit or sleep for 48 hours and helped raise $3 million for children with cancer."

Is that a usual event at the university? It sounds really fun [Smile] . I think that would be an easy task for me.

Sorry to butt in... Can't have this turn into a couple's thread, though [Wink] [Razz] .

Hi TT,

Actually, THON has been a recurring event every year at PSU since at least the '80s, maybe earlier than that. While I've never danced in THON (short for Dance Marathon), I was part of Women's Chorale when we sang the National Anthem to open THON two years ago. I've had friends dance in it and they've had a blast. FOR THE KIDS was the slogan when I was at PSU and I assume it's still why people dance. Money raised through canning (standing on street corners and at well-populated public places all over the US or at least the mid-Atlantic states) goes to support the Four Diamonds fund at PSU's med school, Children's Hospital at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.

THON just ended Sunday night at 7 EST with a total of more than $4million raised for Four Diamonds. You can read PSU's student newspaper, The Collegian's, articles about it here.

The cool part about THON, and the part which I know Ian really liked, is that each group that sends dancers to THON gets to "adopt" a child or children with a terminal illness during the year before and during THON. The college kids spend a lot of time with THON children and their families beforehand and during the event and the kids just soak it all up. It really is all about the kids. [Smile]

I'm a little confused by TFD's downward arrow, but I'm thinking it's a "land down under" reference. As for what TT really meant, well, I have my suspicions [Wink]

Haha... Well, when I posted it, I did so because there were only two people posting. However, I thought I'd go ahead and toy with the alternative meaning, since people will typically take "couple" to imply that there's evidence of a [dating] relationship.

But you may carry on in innocence - it's more fun that way. [Wink]

Wow... How far off-topic has this become?

Heh, actually, not too far off-topic, if at all. Ian's one of those people for whom I'd be embarrassed if someone falsely inferred we were a couple for fear that he'd be grossed out (for lack of a better term) by that implication.
