I woke up to a pleasant surprise this morning. My Yahoo! email inbox got an additional 96mbs in response to Gmail. My attachment size grew to 10mb. Oh, and I just found the /. article about it. [Big Grin]

I woke up to find my email not working, thanks to Yahoo [Mad] . Luckily, they hadn't fully broken it, just put a little "heres a page about why we're great" in when you first logon today, and YahooPops! didn't like it. But it had me worried for a minute.

I'm gonna have to echo some of the /. comments though - why are people going to go for 100mb with big nasty ads over 1gb of storage space with small text ads from GMail? (Apart from the privacy things, which most users won't care about anyway [Roll Eyes] )

Well, unfortunately when I got my free extra 96MB, yahoo decided to not work or get incredibly slow.

With the tradeoff of storage space versus speed, I would rather take speed. Sitting around for 30 second waiting for a single page to load is pretty ridiculous.

I have a gmail account and I have to say, the user interface is far superior - actually it's much like a forum.

Uh, that's probably because it's being slashdotted today - it'll probably peter down by tomorrow.

P.S. As it might have been pointed out to a different poster the other day - see the pencil icon and whatnot above your post - 'tis Edit, which is a bit more convenient...

Well excuse me if I don't remember all the jargon out in the world out there. When I think it's been slashdotted, I would think that slashdot covered that topic, but not the subsequent actions taken by the its public like for instance, in this case: subscribing to yahoo email en mass.

For SBC DSL subscribers it's even better. I now have 2 gigabytes of memory available to me.

Luckily I logged in this morning before it hit the /. front page, so i got to mess around w/ it. Unfortunately, there were still some bugs. And for the people advocating Gmail. Hey, I agree, but I don't have a beta account. So I make due with what I have available, ok?

Well, the two tend to go hand in hand, most people who read slashdot go to the linked sites as well, which brings a huge load of traffic to them (almost a denial-of-service, when you think about it). Mind you, I think more slashdot folks RTFA than used to.

As for yahoo email, it's good news, but doesn't affect me, even though I use yahoo as my main personal email provider. Why not, you ask? The Australian version of yahoo still offers free POP/SMTP access, so my home machine just sucks down the email every five minutes or so, and so I don't get a buildup on the yahoo account anyway.

I would have put the trouble at Yahoo yesterday down to the problems at Akamai, because I couldn't see why /.ers would want to all sign up for what isn't actually that good an offer and also you would hope that Yahoo would be able to handle a /.ing. Also, it wasn't just Yahoo I was having trouble with - Google, Altavista and Microsoft were all either down or very slow until the evening.

As for using Yahoo, I'm with csk on that it doesn't really effect me. I pull down my email every few minutes through YahooPops into Thunderbird, and then if there's something I might need when I'm not at home I put it back on the Yahoo server in another folder. And its just a temporary fix until I get my uni POP email later this year anyway [Smile]

I find the yahoo ads a lot more annoying than gmails. They consisted of small text on the right, kind of like their search engine where the "sponsored" searches end up on the right next to your results. Eh, but they're in a beta test so who knows how bad these pop up ads can get.

That would make a lot more sense - this morning, Yahoo! is significantly faster.
