So I've been suggested all kinds of different video cards but I think I want either a 4GB 670/680 or a 3GB 7970 and I've seen a lot of benchmarks, sometimes the 670 beats the 7970 except in crysis but other times the 7970 is compared to the 680 instead and does pretty well so I have no clue what to get. I am willing to spend no more than about $650 for a card so keep that in mind.

I will be gaming pretty heavily, think BF3/4 and Metro. I will add a second monitor in the future and possibly another GPU for SLI/CF I also do some game programming and 3D model rendering plus some video editing.

Here is my build for reference (no video card of course)

I haven't bought myself a new video card in years, since i stopped gaming.

anyways I always trusted tom's hardware, since you want to lay out some serious dough, it is good to do some research.

I would just buy what tom's hardware says is the best for your application.

Tom's

ps

I am in now way affiliated with toms hardware.

pps

I saw in your buld that you are goign with the intel i/ core, ,

I have been using this for two years now, damn thing overheats my laptop if I try to do anything more than look at videos, major cooling is required, though I see you do have a good fan in there too.

Ash,

I had similar issue with an Acer laptop a while back. The issue was not with the i series, but was instead poor fit on the processor cooler coupled with a laptop body that suffered from a lot of flex. I installed a shim between the processor and CPU and all my overheating issues were resolved.

I've been browsing the Build a PC Reddit recently and according to Tom's Hardware, the HD 7970 provides the best performance for the buck.

The GHz Edition is quite in line with the GTX 680, but it's still less expensive.

On the other hand, the GTX 670 is more like the HD 7950 Boost performance-wise.

The OpenCL performance advantage in the AMD cards make them more suitable for computing tasks, in addition to gaming.

thanks, I' might try that,

I know it is not with thei series. The HP envy series of laptops kept upgrading the processor they put in it but never the case. So my current case, ( whilst being awesone full aluminum, wasn't designed for processors that produce so much heat. I think the first HP envy came out with the i3 procesors. Bit that is not to say that i7s don't require some serious heat removal.

Purpose built or off the shelf. Lets be truthful every OEM cuts corners to make their product seem to be a better buy. For computers Toms seems to be the best for valid info. For ham radios eHAM does have a good review board. While Consumer Research does not take advert monies some of their reviewers appear to have some bias.

I also have a beef with some reviews and surveys, Sometimes the questions are slanted to prevent answers that they do not want.

Well time to go out and check the ground temperature. Getting close to planting season.
