My inkjet clogged again, and since I now have a job paying real money I'm considering a laser replacement.

It gets used fairly infrequently, and whilst colour would be nice, B/W only would be OK if quality/price was a lot more sensible.

Anyone got any recommendations?

My parents have a Brother HL-2040, and it works wonderfully for them. I'd have to recommend any of the Brother HL line.

Ha ha, funny. I have a Brother HL-2040 as well. I think its at least two years old now and it just finally started complaining that the starter toner cartridge is low. We, um, don't really print very much. Anyhoo, Amazon seems to have real Brother toner for only about $35, so hooray!

I've heard the drums in Brother lasers don't last very long, but with a low print duty it may not matter.

Alternately, you might be able to get a cheap-ish color laser nowadays. Either way, you'll recoup the printer cost in ink savings. Ink sucks.

I currently use a Xerox 6110N, which I bought for 300k COP (about 150 USD). The only problem I've had so far is that it's prone to paper jams if all sheets aren't exactly the same size, otherwise it works like a charm.

I'm pretty partial to HP for B&W laser printers.

I'm not quite as keen on their drivers, though -- ideally get something that your OS natively supports. I refuse to load their driver on my MacBook - I PDF things instead and print through VMware. (I've seen Windows boxes get utterly hosed by HP drivers, and have little faith that they'll do any better with Mac. [OTOH, my VM copy of XP is basically a 'free-for-all,' so if it dies, c'est la vie.])

I should warn you that toner may be a bit expensive - you should check online to find out how many pages an average cartridge can print, and what it costs to replace one. It was for this reason that I highly recommended a 'business inkjet' to a small business recently, as a color LaserJet would have cost many times more. It's really sad, but it's pretty much cheaper to buy a new inkjet than to buy the ink. [Frown]

I'm happy withthe HP 2605dn, the only two drawbacks are the size and that it is ugly, but it works well, and is relatively cheap.

____ littlefish, Learn to be a stone mason , and get a hammer and chisel, a couple of star drills and you are good to go.

____ I like old school, "dot matrix" the ribbons last for ever, the printer it self will last for ever, and if you are only going to print text, why get the high end stuff. I still use a very old Centronics GLPII 20+ years old. ribbons are still available.

____ Then you get to tear off the tractor edges!!!

I have had a Brother 2030 for quite a few years now; I bought it at 99CDN$ for exactly the reasons you mention. It still isn't out of its first cartridge, and as such, the best printer I ever had. It doesn't do color, but for the very few times I would need it, I don't mind.
