So the reams of paper we use in our office all say on the package that they contain a minimum of 65% eucalyptus. Why is that?

Eucalyptus grows quick. Sustainable forestry and all that. Doesn't even have to be grown in Australia, though once you start down that path you've got the whole invasive species issue to deal with.

In fact, they grow far better in foreign soil than here in oz.
Eucalyptus oil is a natural insecticide. Aussie insects have co-evolved with the trees, so they have partial resistance, and can munch on the leaves if they're careful. Most foreign insects can't.

I've never seen such beautiful, healthy-looking gum trees as those I saw growing at 4000 metres in Bolivia.

I saw them too, but having no basis for comparison, I couldn't say if they were healthier than their Aussie counterparts or not. They were nice and shady though.

Erm...perhaps it's greener in terms of the local environment, but what's happening with shipping?

They've got eucalyptus growing in Europe, so it's not as bad as you might be thinking dman.

btw - in oz, the most common plantation tree is pine, blame the aforementioned 'invasive species' effect.

Cheers, Xanthine. [Smile]

I'll freely admit that I did zero research, and was strictly going off the comments and humorous poll.

If that's the case, groovy stuff. Next up, Charmin and Kleenex (TM) need to clean up their act...big time.
