Is there a difference at all or is it considered a synonym?

Can a person be one but not the other?

(i.e. can a geek not be a nerd? or can a nerd not be a geek?)

Am I making sense? [Confused] [Geek]

I think that the generally accepted definition is that a nerd is a generally intelligent and socially inept person, whereas a geek is a person with an extremely deep interest in a subject, possibly of normal intelligence, though usually not.

Some people just use them as the same thing, though.

If my mother's cooking during my childhood is any indication, the major difference is that lasagna has burned sauce and overcooked, dried-out noodles while spaghetti has burned sauce and overcooked, water-logged noodles.

Hmmmmm. . . . I think there's a big difference.

Nerds: Not so much of a sense of humor, smart, and think they're always right.

Geeks: distinct sense of humor, intelligent, and always right.

Ummm....and I bet you had to eat every single bite of that water-logged noodle dish! [Big Grin]

Oh so now you have to be evil bastard in the minds of geeks to be a nerd? That seems rather unfair.
