OK, I just found out about this one. I want a better job than what I have so I was flipping through an online job site and found out that the BesT Buy in my area is hiring. Yes, I know...the Best Buy blue people or smurfs but hey at least it is better than what I have right now. I put in an app and in the same day I was asked for an interview. Now they are hiring for computer jobs through their "Geek Squad"...check this out: http://www.geeksquad.com/main.asp

I would like to know if any of you have any experence with this or know anything about it. All I can say is that this is just plain geeky. You gotta love it. [Smile] Thanks for the input. [Razz]

Hmm, their website doesn't work very well if you don't have flash enabled by default (Firefox with click to play flash plugin).

What sort of geek is attracted by a flash dependent website, anyway? </grumpyoldman>

I'm moderately sure best buy is ripping off nerds on site. Or perhaps nerdsonsite ripped off someone else.

I know nerdsonsite is like an entrepeneur thing. You pay them a huge amount of money, and use their software and their suppliers to sell (I think.) and they just send you the contacts when people call the 1-877 number. It's a good idea, but their prices are outrageous, and I'm not overly sure their 'nerds' really have any clue what they're doing, but that's neither here nor there.

This is true...all that flash sucks. The site is very choppy and laid out bad. I had to launch (aaarrrggghhh) IE to view it. I do not like flash so I never installed the Mozilla plug in for it. I find Flash annoying. It is the "image" that they portray that is so funny. Can I see myself dressed like that fixing computers? LOL Do you know how much fun you can have with that look? LOL I know that the job is not my dream job but it is a stepping stone to a better job. You have to start somewhere. [Big Grin]

By the way, we have in our area a service called: Geeks For Hire. This is a service that you call an 800 number and they dispatch a Geek to your location to fix stuff. The business is your own business and you "use" or "lease" the GOC name, car, image, etc. What Best Buy did was purchase the Geek Squad company and add it to the Best Buy company to offer more services to the public, so it was already an astablished company that Best Buy bought out. The GOC in our area drive around in Pt Cruisers. I just wanted some input on it if anyone knew anything about the company. I was offered an interview and because this would be my first tech job other than help desk...I would like to have it. [Big Grin]

Geek Squad was an independant company - and I knew a couple of people who worked for them (with them??) It was pretty geek oriented and at times had a lot of independant contractors working under their umbrella.

Now I can't speak as to how geek friendly it has been since the BestBuy buy out. I'm sure that the founders have done well with the deal and kudo's to them for pulling that off. I haven't really talked with anyone for a couple of years that worked there. (Dang perl mongers meeting switched night and now conflicts with other stuff - sigh)

I thought that I would ask because I am not a big fan of Best Buy because every time you go in there you had better know what you are looking for and avoid the Best Buy Blue People because many of them have no clue. Kinda like Radio Shack...you know "You've got questions, we have blank stares". [Big Grin] Thanks for the help. [Razz]

I know a guy that works on the Geek Squad and seems to enjoy it. Some of the Geek Squad members look more like nerds due to the way they have them dress.

The thing with Best Buy is they are all about sales (well that and making the customer happy about the purchase they made. So not only will you need to be a geek, you will need to be a geek with social skills and comfortable with one on one interaction and any conflicts that will arise with customers that are upset about losing all their data etc...

But you will also be making house calls. You just might get a woman that wants you to mount a hard drive into her new case. (que the porn music) "Oh that is such a big hard drive you have there. Are you sure it will fit?" [Wink]

If customer satisfaction is on best buy's company agenda, then they've failed as a company. Period. They're a KNOWN bully to customers. If selling is #1, and customer satisfaction is #2, then that #2 is *WAY* down on the list.

I have to agree, Best Buy is really bad when it comes to knowing their product. Also about the computer tech job...I am visually impaired and can not drive so they would have to keep me in the store behinfd the counter...which sucks because I would love to be mobile. [Smile] But I just have to do what I have to do. I have a Cellphone sales job that I was offered so today is my first day on that job. I will try it and see if it is for me. [Smile] I would rather have the computer tech job and I think you all understand why. [Smile] [Big Grin]

In our area the service Geeks On Call drive PT Cruisers. [Smile] By the way....my first night on the new job I got selling cell phones was kind of a let down. I have had no training and the manager was not even there. I was working with a new hire of 2-3 weeks and she did not even know that I was coming. Now does that leave you with a good first impression of the company/manager or what? LOL I have an interview @ Best Buy today....and yes I know that Best Buy is not the best in the world when it comes to knowing what the heck they are doing but at least it is more money than I am making right now. [Smile] I am gonna keep trying with the Cell Phone joint.....it is called Wireless Retail Inc, but the girl was there all day and sold nothing...not one phone. Her best day has been two (2)....thats 2 freakin' phones. Stand around for 8-12 hours for zero-two phones a day???....boring. LOL All I want is a chance at a decent entry level job that is somewhat task work....you know, the "give me something to do and leave me alone and I will come get you when I am done" job. LOL Anywho, thank you all for the input. I will keep trying and trying and trying and something good will turn up. Never, ever, ever give up. [Big Grin]

Oh no - don't go there - at a previous employer I knew several guys who had previously worked doing cable-tv installations. They had no "good" stories - just horror tales about finding out that people who really should wear a lot of clothing are the ones that don't wear undergarments. Just their descriptions was enough to make me want to gouge my eyes out - I can't imagine actually being subjected to such sights.

OK, I just found out that the Best Buy that I am interviewing for has not yet adopted the Geek Squad in that store. I would be working in the tech department for Best Buy. They said they are trying to get Geek Squad in this new store but as of now it is still Besy Buy tech department that I would be interviewing for. Now, does that change anything at all? DOH [Razz]

OK, just so you will know, On Friday I go for my 3rd and final interview with Best Buy. I found out that in the 2nd interview I was 1 of 300 being interviewed. Now that I am going into the final interview I am not sure how many I am up against. I just wanted you wonderful folks to know. Everybody has got to start somewhere so this would be my big start. From what I determined from their site, I can pretty much say that I don't like them. The default to Flash would be very annoying, and the format ('sleep mode') for "Agents In Action" is very unappealing and bothering. But mainly their concern with outfits and stereotypes is what bugs me. To me it seems to be just another striving attempt to attract buyers using psychological pre-associations with geeks to 'high waters', conservative wear, caffeine, and glasses. Not all geeks wear glasses, and not all drink caffeine or even react to it similarly. And above all, not all geeks are comfortable in high waters and formal clothing! The characteristic that should be associating with geeks pertaining to clothes should be "comfort," and it is apparent that not all are comfortable in suits, ties, and shiny shoes. I'm not saying that 'high waters' aren't comfortable. They're just pants; if they fit, they work. I would still be wearing mine if I could fit into them, but I don't go looking for a pair - I don't care. You shouldn't have to buy clothes to be a certain type of person.

Mm.. sorry for the rant, but it needs to come out now and then. I'll just leave on a positive note saying that I think CompUSA is the greatest. Everybody's friendly and knowledgable, and their musical taste is totally bodacious [Smile] . Is there anything bad about them?

I like CompUSA also but my favorite is micro center They have every thing. Includeing a Mac section and they carrie more Linux stuff then most places. I know CompUSA has a Mac section and some Linux stuff but not nearly as much as Microcenter. It's a great place.

They seem pretty neat, but there aren't any Micro Centers around Washington. *shrug*

I really like going to CompUSA, and I would more regularly if it were closer to me... There's a Circuit City practically across the street from here, so I buy stuff like my graphing calculator and my thumb drive there though. I think the people at our C.C. are coolo, concerning those who actually know what they're doing (with computers). I just met a Canadian-Norwegian software specialist there a few days ago whose into Numismatics like me - how rare is that?

I'd just like to add that I used to work for Best Buy and while I wasn't in a store or on the Geek Squad I can tell you it, BB is a joke. The reason most of their employees are clueless as to what the products are is because there really isn't a training program in place. The one they do have is all about making sales, selling warranties and making sales. Finally, once you walk out of that door with product in hand you better pray it works flawlessly until your old and gray. Because if it doesnt, you'll probably never get any help in getting in fixed.

Comp-screw-SA is just crap - plain and simple. MicroCenter, on the other hand, is a geek nirvana. It's a very good thing there isn't one near me, or I fear I'd spend a bit too much money on cool stuff. The next time I go out to the island to see a friend of mine, I'll probably ask him if we can go to MicroCenter again [Razz] . Good deals, no pressure staff, and an awesome selection make for one very happy dragon [Smile] .
