Hmm, I'd like to do a s/Mac/Lab Rat/, but my girlfriend believes you'd start gagging if I were to do that. Oh well :-/. On a tech note, I do love Perl quite dearly - in all it's foreach;y///;s///,hash glory.

Xanathine? Who the hell is that?

When I saw Just_Jess' comment, I surely thought she was talking about the nick typo, I never even noticed the other one - thanks Vic for point that out :-/. If i didn't have a nice calm guinea pig resting on me, I'd have harsher words to say.

when will people learn that mac does not mean mac os and pc does not mean windows. i mean they are different architecture types too.

there are sooooooo many more operating systems out there and many of them run on multiple architectures unlike mac os and windows. they are proprietary unlike other operating systems which can run on multiple platforms uncluding they dead alpha processor

Was that the one set in Ancient Greece, with the tough broad in the leather gear, and her 'ambiguous' relationship with her 'girly' side-kick?

Or was that 'Xana - Warrior Princess' ?

Actually, MacOS and Windows (after 98) are portable to other platforms - they are just not sold that way. NT was originally developed on MIPS processors.

But, again, who cares. Virtually all software ever used comes in binary form. So you have to be concerned with finding the program you want compiled for the architecture you have. Software vendors hate having to do multiple builds. I know I do. If PA-RISC, Alpha, MIPS or Sparc dissappeared from the face of the earth today, and never were, it would have saved my company 10s of thousands of dollars in development costs.

Using an OS and software that is portable to other hardware is simply tool for business buyers to not get locked in by their hardware vendors. WIntel achieves this today - you can always switch hardware vendors and keep your software. In that respect, it might make a better business choice to use windows, than mac, but I would still argure that the TCO of Macs is lower, once you include support costs.

It all depends on what you prefer. In my opinion, neither of the two (PCs or Macs) are better than the other. Sure, the PPC platform does more work than the x86 per clock cycle, but on the other hand x86 processors tend to do the same amount of work for less money... Even that depends on how you benchmark it. There is a lot of dispute over this.

I've used Windows for many years, and I do hate the way it crashes. But I do have to say that some versions of Windows are pretty stable; I've never had Win2k crash on me. XP has a couple of times, but I have talked with some Mac-using friends who've even crashed OS X a couple times. Linux I've never had crash.

In terms of graphics and multimedia, it's the same deal. A friend of mine edits video for a local TV station, and has worked on both Macs and PCs. He says that there is really no difference; he works on either of them easily. Also, a lot of the movie graphics are being done with PCs. The Lord of the Rings movies were done completely with PCs running Linux. In fact Massive, the software they use to create the 3D crowd and battle scenes, only runs on Linux or IRIX. This link has some more info.

By the way, I can't wait until Massive starts floating around on some P2P network... [Big Grin]
