GM: Out of curiosity....is a 'packet protector' anything like a 'pocket protector'? Or is it some sort of network/firewall device I am not aware of. ![[Razz]](tongue.gif)

You mean you've never heard of them before? They are ... ummm... bluetooth firewalls for ... uhhh... pen drives that use a special flash memory made out of ink. So you also have to buy a pocket packet protector protector, so the hardware companies have you comming and going.
So I typo'd again... so, use^H^H^H sue me.

I think it also has something to do with "I did it the hard way". My computer reboots about every month or so - sometimes more often. It just makes things simpler sometimes. I've only been using *nix for a year or two, so I haven't decided to try for a long uptime yet.
Besides, it's the easy way to recover from Goatse.

But then they sometimes don't seem to mind so much when men go down on them, either. ![[evil]](graemlins/evil.gif)

I saw that *years* ago, and then sometime earlier this year, I wanted to find it again, and it took me for-fscking-ever to find. I made a local copy, and kept reference to the location by naming it kissmyfloppy-com-virus-protection.jpg or what-have-you, so it was fresh on my mind. That, and I had recently relocated it on my HD such that I could show it to my boss, due to some virus issues we've been having at work (some clueless people we're trying to help). I just put it on my screen for about 2 seconds to show it to him, and then closed it, and he was laughing his ass off for a good minute . I'd really like to incorporate a similar bit of art concepts for posters warning about computer safety, but obviously, you run the risk of offending a very select few :-/. Seriously though, it gets the point across so easily - it's just unmistakable, and similar ideas might just get people to *think* for a moment about protecting their PC.
A colleague of mine has taken to warning people about file sharing as follows: "You really need to be careful about what you download with this software. You're downloading files from complete strangers and trusting it. Would you just have unprotected sex with a random stranger right off a city street? This is what file sharing is like at times - you're not even looking at the person, let alone what they might have." Seeing as we've learned that the many variants of SDBot first infect a network via file sharing downloads, I'd say he's spot on.

An even more accurate ,albeit disturbing, visual of P2P file sharing I find is the *ahem* Gloryhole parallel.
You can stick 'it' in that hole, but you're never gonna know who or what is sucking on the other side, and there is a pretty good chance you'll catch something.

SGI just ported its Graphics and Video stuff to Linux. The stuff that was available for Irix that is. So, it might be possible now. And yeah, other OSes have positive, increasing Velocity value. Linux has positive, increasing Acceleration value, on the other hand...
Of course it is not forever (most probably)... But...
